Another Year, Another Dollar
on March 21, 2016

TT 2015 made it easier to enter foreign taxes paid. Didn't even have to fill out or file a Form 1116. I would not want to calculate AMT by hand. TT made that easy, too. (AMT due was painful, however.) All in all, a better experience using TT 2015 this year. A suggested improvement: calculate total foreign income. This value is needed to answer one of TT 2015's questions asking if you received over $20k in foreign income.
What's great about it: Easy to download financial account information
What's not so great: Took forever to get through the e-filing pages - a necessity.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excellent Product

I have used TurboTax forever (I really don't know how long) and find it easy to use and it gets better every year. I love the easy step option and use it every year. The fact that I can import the information from the previous year makes everything so much easier, that alone makes me keep using this software. I do wish the Forms option would be improved a bit. I would prefer that this option just show the IRS forms and not list all of the worksheets. Let those pop up when I double click but not be listed. Overall this is an excellent package that I plan to continue using, even though I am retired and have a very simple tax situation.
What's great about it: Very easy to use, love the easy step
What's not so great: Need to improve the forms section
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments, I moved

turbox tax 2015
on March 21, 2016

This big issue for 2015 is with the 116 foreign tax forms. If you try to create a new form just to get the brokerage name onto the title it still keeps copy 1 and therefore all input on foreign income and foreign tax end up be doubled up .If you deleted the form and start over all the carryovers data disappear and now the total tax is brought forward instead of just the allowed max amount If this problem occurs delete the new copy and use copy 1 and then just manually input the carryovers into the 1116 worksheet copy 1 using data from your 2014 taxes, and it will calculate correctly.
Turbo tax has been notified via a live agent relative to this issue
For this year do not try to create a new copy just for naming purposes. Use the copy 1 that is auto generated and everything will come out correctly.
What's great about it: transferring info from last year into this year was seamless. Error message system very detailed to the form and line it
What's not so great: Transfer of 2014 NY State data does not bring along school district and code from 2014. 8849 Sh Form hard to get to
Pros: I bought or sold investments
