Glitches but representatives solved them
on March 20, 2016
Posted by: jknee
There were some glitches in the software this year, but the two representatives I spoke to were very helpful in solving the problems I encountered. I liked the feature in which when I needed to talk to a representative I was able to provide my telephone number for them to call me back in about an hour or so instead of me having to wait in a queue.
What's great about it: Importing data from last year's returns and importing data from my financial institution
What's not so great: Some glitches this year
Pros: I bought or sold investments

F1116 from a K-1 needs bug fixes and better advice
on March 20, 2016

Filling out F1116 (the foreign tax credit form) for income generated on a K-1 is difficult.
First, there is a mistake in how TT internally handles line 16 income and foreign taxes.
The interest expense (partnership level) on the K1P worksheet did not find the partnership level income to offset it. TT seems to get the individual and partnership numbers mixed up, so it does not carry over the code "16D" partnership income to the K1P worksheet.
If I enter the K-1 $$ in "D" partnership income to line 1 above the line 2 interest expense, the problem is resolved.
However, TT would have you believe that code "C" partnership income should go there.
Second, TT has difficulty setting up forms for accrued foreign taxes and paid foreign taxes on F1116. I have two limited partnerships that send me K-1 forms. One generates passive income that shows foreign taxes paid. A second generates passive income that shows foreign taxes accrued. In the interview, TT asks whether the taxes are paid or accrued, but it ends up putting both accrued and paid money on the same passive F1116. Then in the review at the end of the return, TT says that you cannot put both accrued and paid on the same F1116. I had to manually add another F1116 with passive/accrued income, then manually re-point the passive/accrued K-1 to this new K-1. TT then complained that I had two K-1's with passive income. It would be better if during the interview that TT made separate F1116's for passive/paid vs passive/accrued foreign taxes.
What's great about it: Data entry was relatively smooth
What's not so great: incorrect handling of K-1, line 16; inability to segregate passive/accrued foreign tax from passive/paid tax from K-1

Very simple

After a few years of using Turbo Tax the process of filling our taxes has become very simple. The questions lead you right through the process. I did try to use an in person tax preparation service a few years ago and realized they made mistakes. I went back to doing the tax returns myself and I am very confident that Turbo Tax helps ensure they are 100%accurate. My children use Turbo Tax too!
What's great about it: Questions, lead me to the right places, very intuitive

I've been using it for at least 14 years and each year it seems to get easier to use. I particularly appreciate that it pulls in last years information.
What's great about it: Pretty much covers everything and allows me to search for answers even if I'm not sure what the question is.
What's not so great: Slow loading
