I like this, but the K1 is difficult Seems recurring customers should get a price break.
What's great about it: like last years totals for comparison
What's not so great: K1 is hard to understand

Mixed emotions

I like the way that Turbotax leads you through the return with Q&A and found it to be generally comprehensive. However, It fell short of expectations in several respects to me, namely: > State returns - After answering all of the questions on an Illinois return, an error was found and I was asked to insert the value of particular line on the tax form. It was not intuitive where to find the form info - after finally pulling the forms up they were difficult to edit. Also, since it was my first time filing in Illinois I was not permitted to e-file, yet Turbotax gave me two options - e-file now or e-file later. Again, I had to work around the program to print and file. > Educational expenses - should have/could have been a lot clearer. I filed for both myself as well as two college children. Had to go outside of Turbotax to determine best way to apply deductions - I expected more from the software.
What's great about it: Majority of the Federal return Q&A
What's not so great: State software falls short, as do explanation of educational deductions

Overall, I was pretty happy with this year's version of TurboTax. It seems like every year they make it easier and easier to use. This year was not exception, and it was pretty easy to finish everything.
What's great about it: A lot easier this year
What's not so great: I had questions that it couln't answer

Help with MLPs
on March 19, 2016

The tax aspects of Master Limited Partnerships are painful at best. That's not TT's fault. TT makes the pain worse with: (a) a poor interview process containing instructions that lead to errors, (b) impenetrable or incompletely described data flows within TT, (c) obsolete information or instructions, and (d) potential errors introduced by inaccurate procedures. It is to the point that I'm considering the use of a CPA to avoid the time loss and the pain. I do know this pain and the personal time-value of the of tax preparation effort is causing me to think twice about MLP investments (in addition to the already rigorous due diligence that MLP investments demand). As I wrote in part of a response to a question in one of TT's forums "Yes this is entirely too painful. If I can figure this out, then TT easily ought to be able to write the code to make it happen; I’m disappointed that after all these years they have not."
What's great about it: Really simple with almost everything
What's not so great: Poor to useless treatment of MLPs, particularly sale of units
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very good, except printing

Set "properties" for 2 sided and voucher replaced p.2 of 1040, messed up all the rest. Re-did printing allowing program default, result was single sheets.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Wasted paper: program printing glitch.

I have used TurboTax in years past & buy the new edition each tax time because of its ease & accuracy.
What's great about it: Easy to follow step by step instruction. Ability to 'back up' if you need to.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy to do

My experience was generally good, but one area needs improvement in future years. Program only allows view of 50 stock/mutual fund transactions, but there is not notice of that and no instructions on how to confirm accuracy of additional transactions downloaded from financial institution. A simple note on this would save a lot of frustration.
What's great about it: Asked good questions in interview mode. Allowed downloading of information from financial institutions
What's not so great: Only allows one to view 50 stock/mutual fund transactions, but there is not notice of that and no instructions.
