I have used turbotax over the years. It has gotten better and better. Most notable is looks the same each year so I don't have to learn a new package. Imports were smooth and easy.
Thanks for being there Intuit. I use a Mac and business software is not always complete but Intuit treats Mac users very well.
What's great about it: I had many one time item, sold, bought house, sold securitis, etc
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I had to Pay in!

The program is easy to use. I liked the helpful links when I needed more information. I also liked that you can easily go back and change items, I had to use this several times as I received late 1099s. I like that you can work on it when you have time and can easily go back to where you left off.
What's great about it: Easy to use, helpful links, you can do it at your own time, easy to go back and make changes
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

A year of trouble
on March 18, 2016

I have used TurboTax Premier for 15 years with very few problems. this year was totally different. When I attempted to load my Premier disk onto Windows 10, it only loaded basic and refused to update either state or federal. Cleared internet history and cookies, still refused to update or even give me a new return past entering income. Customer service cut me up off several times. Loaded onto new Apple. Struggled to update and save files properly. Finally transmitted returns after 23 tries (cleared internet history and cookies each time).
What's great about it: The actual tax preparation was excellent as usual.
What's not so great: TurboTax would not work at all with Windows 10, and would not update. Struggled on Apple.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo tax forced me to triple check everything and automatically filled in K-1 info.
One thing that I would like to see improved on the state and local sales tax. I keep all sales receipts and multiply their total by our combined local plus state sales tax. When I did this the the message came up that I should use the automatic government calculation for Federal sales tax (which is true). The problem was that the State calculation greatly improved for me by manually entering my sales taxes. The Turbo tax warning should say that the State return is also affected by manually entering sales taxes and you should wait until both Federal and State info is entered before making a decision on State and Local sales tax entry.
What's great about it: Logical to follow and easy to back up
What's not so great: Required a lot of research, especially with K-1's
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Filing 2015 Tax
on March 18, 2016

Ima and Scott, Tax Advisors were enormously helpful. Their knowledge both of tax law and Turbtax, their patience, and problem solving ability were a great help to me. I cannot say enough good things about how much they helped. The regular contacts I reached didn't have the knowledge or experience to answer my questions although they tried very hard to be helpful. One of them referred me to the Tax Advisors who solved my problems.
In general, i am a big fan of Turbtax.
What's great about it: Special assistance by Ima and Scott, Tax Advisors
What's not so great: 2014 return did not download to 2015 taxes. Maybe my error?

5th year of using Turbo Tax

When I completed preparing my return, my refund was so large that I knew there were errors. The biggest problem had to do with the phrasing of the question that affects deductibility of IRAs. When it asked "are you covered by a pension at work?", I answered no because my company does not have a pension plan. But, upon re-reading it, I realized that this applied to 401K plans also, which I do not think of as a pension. The question should be rephrased to make it clear that it applies to 401Ks, without the need to click on the help link.
The other error had to do with my 2014 refund amount decreasing after I had filed. Turbo Tax pulled in the original amount, which caused my 2015 estimated tax payments to be overstated. I'm not sure what TurboTax could have done differently, programmatically, but it shows the importance of carefully reviewing the return before filing.
A bigger issue had to do with TurboTax 2014...For some reason Turbo Tax told me to file 3 estimated tax payments and skip the September payment. I did this and got penalized for not filing September. If your results tell you to skip an estimated payment, don't do it.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: a few things are less than obvious
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
