Just as expected, just average

I switched from HRBlock to TurboTax this year in order to get the ability to automatically electronically download tax info from my brokerage accounts. It worked beautifully for that. But TurboTax could have but didn't pull in all of last year's tax info from last year's HRBlock forms.
The Premier version seemed weak on help for Sch C Business expenses.
I could have saved money on MN state tax penalty by going to paper forms and mailing it in, but decide to pay the penalty and stay with electronic filing. I don't know if that is a short coming of TurboTax or problem with MN.
What's great about it: Automatically connected to and downloaded brokerage account info
What's not so great: Did not do everything possible to avoid State tax penalty

TurboTax 2015 - ALMOST 5 STARS
on March 12, 2016

After sailing thru my federal return like always, this year I was confronted with an odd error check result on my RI State return relating to some obscure form RI-1040H. No explanation as to what this form is, or why it thinks I needed to resolve radio-button entries ON the non-existent form. Searching HELP returned another RI resident asking the identical question, TWO MONTHS ago, with NO answer. I simply joy-clicked what I hope were innocuous responses to clear the error check to allow e-filing. This is doubly frustrating as my state return is always a simple matter of answering NO to virtually every prompted Q&A screen, so I have no clue what prompted the system to throw this error. I expected better error correction from Intuit for silly issues such as this, especially this late in the tax filing season. Consequently this rating is only FOUR STARS.
What's great about it: Overall this is the same solid product I've used for MANY years
What's not so great: One unresolved hiccup on my RI Tax return

Much easier than the old way with paper

The very best reason to use TurboTax is it eliminates the need to wade through rules, mystifying jargon, and various other complexities. Just enter the data they ask for, make a few choices, and that's it.
The downside of that is that only totals are shown, so as I look back at my printouts of prior years returns I don't know how I arrived at the numbers I entered, which I always did when I used the paper forms. All I know is the result, not how I got there. I wish there were a way to print out all the numbers I entered, not just the result.
One change is badly needed in the Charitable Contribution section. With monetary donations it has the option of entering multiple donations of varying amounts with me just providing the total. Smart. However, with miles driven for charitable purposes it foolishly assumes every trip is the same length, and asks how many such trips there were. The reality is that the charitable driving most of us do includes trips of widely varying lengths. There is no option comparable to the monetary donation which allows me simply to enter the total number of miles. As a result, I must factor the total into a standard trip length and a specific number of those imaginary trips so the TurboTax program can multiply them to provide me with the total I already had. Stupid. TurboTax should (similar to monetary donations) provide the option of having multiple trips of varying lengths, and me simply entering the total.
The final review alerted me to a problem with a 1099-R I had entered earlier. However, I had entered two 1099-R forms from the same institution, one mine and one hers, so did not know which one had the problem. A way is needed to identify that document (is it mine or hers), or an option to go directly to that particular document, where I could see whose it is. This time, all I could do is review both documents several times until at last I noticed something in one of them that could be the problem.
I have no idea where the data I enter ends up on the forms. In other works, it lacks correlation with IRS forms. I know where in TurboTax I entered it, but not where it ends up in the final documents I submitted then printed out.
What's great about it: Walked me through the process, including all options. Mostly understandable. Did not require technical knowledge.
What's not so great: Some explanations not clear. Data entered doesn't always relate to specific places on forms.

Very clear and helpful

Turbotax is fairly easy to use and leads you step by step through the process. I have used it for several years now.
Recommend improving the ability to enter numerous stock sales. Right now you have to request additional inputs sections one at a time. It would be helpful to be able to add 10 or 15 sections at one time.
What's great about it: clear directions
What's not so great: Difficult to enter numerous stock sales.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments, I moved

What's great about it: A 5th Grader could follow the instructions.
What's not so great: None
Pros: I bought or sold investments, I moved
