Hard to file taxes in two states when I moved
on March 7, 2016
Posted by: anon2016anon
Normally very helpful. I hope they work on the interaction between the different state products to be more helpful for people when they move and have to file taxes for part years in each of two states. Some entries were not clear; for example I was asked for a $ value for "income in other state." At first I entered my actual income, but much later the result looked really strange. I had to go back and include dividends, interest, etc. in that entry. I don't think that is their normal usage of "income."
What's great about it: mostly clear entry screens
What's not so great: poor interaction between states. I moved last year and TurboTax made me do a lot of calculations off-screen.
Pros: I moved

Job Done, but could be lots better
on March 7, 2016

I've used TT for many years. It does the job. Downloads 1099 info from brokerages and banks so we don't have to enter.
But -- when I want to go back and work on one charitable contribution, out of many, I first have to answer questions I've already answered, such as "Did you give money to charities?" No ability to just go to that one charity. And in error review, it identifies errors that the program has made, not me, in the downloading process. That is, it entered information that should not be entered! And then complained about it!
What's great about it: Familiarity, Import from banks easy
What's not so great: Too many little errors identified that are the program's fault, Requires too much repetition

Glitch in Minnesota State Taxes program
on March 7, 2016
Posted by: NorthernGirl1
Federal taxes went smoothly, however, when the Minnesota State program imported data from the federal form, it made an error in handling my Alaska Permanent Fund dividend. The number on Fed 1040A, Ln 13 ($2072) was inexplicably DOUBLED when entered on line 8 of Minnesota Schedule M1NR ($4144). I was able to enter the correct figure on M1NR but when I tried to e-file the Minnesota return, an error message blocked the transmission. I was able to print a return with the correct figures and mail it to the Minnesota revenue dept. It is too late to help me now, but PLEASE CORRECT THIS FOR NEXT YEAR.
What's great about it: Federal was a snap
What's not so great: Minnesota state taxes had glitch that blocked e-filing

Wonderful Annual Experience
on March 7, 2016

I use TurboTax every year and love that my previous returns and deductions carry over year for year. My taxes are simple and pretty typical every year so now it only takes me about a half hour to update all the info and get it finished. Plus and extra couple minutes to write this.
What's great about it: Fast, Simple, Protected
Pros: I moved

Investment Downloads from Vanguard Group
on March 7, 2016
Posted by: DocDorsey
I spent 10 hours total trying to find out how to correct the downloads for my many tax exempt funds with Vanguard Group. 2 and a half of those hours were spent over the phone finding the sequence and perfoming caluclations with Turbo Tax support re-filling and filing blanks for calculations requireing Single state dividend entry calculations followed by performing calculations on those same fund investments since dividends also came from "Other States".
What's great about it: All of the financial data showing on the paper copies of the 1099 Div were downloaded
What's not so great: Vangaurd Group's software mapping of the Tax Exempt Dividend funds are inadequately completed.

Good Job

I have used Turbo for the past several years. The only snag I run into is the forex trading and the non downloadable 1099-b form from TD Futures.
What's great about it: Good job leading through the various income and deduction categories
What's not so great: Hard to figure out where to enter an abbreviated Form 1099-b for futures contracts
