Cost is excessive

Very poor no explanation on how or why thing are calculated
You have to pay extra for additional State Tax and the you have to pay extra for e-mail to each state, by the time you get it done you could hire a pro.

What's not so great: I used to use the Delux version, and it worked ok for my simple investments. The Premier version is priced too high,

As a habitual user the process still gets better every year - happy it is almost automatic to do the California tax form for rentals.
What's great about it: loads info and provides clear instructions
What's not so great: some color coding confuses me

Reliable tax prep software

I've been using Turbotax for about 7-8 years now and it has proven to be a great way to prepare my taxes, with generally good instructions. However, it's not perfect. For example, I get a small monthly retirement check from the PBGC, which took over my airline retirement plan after Delta went through its post-9/11 bankruptcy process. On my 1099-R, Box 2a (taxable amount of distribution) is left blank and the box is checked saying the taxable amount couldn't be determined. TurboTax instructions say that if you leave 2a blank, it will compute taxes assuming all of the money was taxable. However, during the review process, it says just the opposite! It gives you the chance to go back and manually type in the taxable amount; if you don't, the program would go on as if the amount was non-taxable. This is an area you need to be careful about.
What's great about it: Saves historical data to simplify next year's preparation
What's not so great: Some weak areas

TurboTax Does It

Fairly easy to use: especially for an old-timer like me.
The lay-out of the forms and sections are comfortable to use.
I appreciate the thoughtful questions you ask; to make sure that I have entered all the data and values for each section of the form.
I know that I will be again using the TurboTax next year at about this tome.

What's great about it: Relatively easy to navigate through the program and enter the data.
