Stable Operation But Not Making It Easier?
on March 1, 2016

I am a long time user of TurboTax and I like the safety and stability of the product and have seen it go through its changes over the years. After last years debacle I was expecting the higher price and was fine with that, however I found this to be less efficient version than ever before.
Example, when you select to review all tax subjects together after the income section, you are taken back to the main list after every question even when you select the sub group. Was it a big deal to have to go back and forth 20 times and scroll? No, just inconvenient but it should of been something a first time application creator would have thought of.
Also, the way it handles "Misc. Interest" for box #3 "Other" makes you replicate the form mentioned above that is already supplied to the IRS like any other form, why reproduce it?should be review. Also, it leads you to declare it as a business expense which really wasted a lot of time and I had to manually delete form and select other options to bypass. Something is not right there but I do not hold this against my satisfaction rating. But after last year and the new pricing you certainly underwhelmed me with a average - just acceptable experience, congratulations. Maybe that is the advantage of making such a great product all those years? You do not have to work so hard for a few years at a time right?
What's great about it: Same format we are used to basically but not fluid
What's not so great: Wasted repetitive Movments - Not Improving Anything
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Had to manually go adjust the refund amount I wanted retained to apply for 2016. TurboTax should have asked for that much earlier in the process.
What's not so great: Never asked about amount to apply to 2016
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Need to Clarify Rental Property Options
on March 1, 2016

We have been using TurboTax for about 10 years now. I love that all of our personal info (and capital loss info, depreciation info, etc.) is carried over each year, so I don't need to re-enter it all. My main complaint is that every year there are new questions (usually regarding our rental property) that don't seem to have any appropriate choices. I have to choose an answer, and head down a path, only to find out it was the wrong choice. Then, it's Back, Back, Back...and Choose the other path! Frustrating. I'm sure a professional tax preparer could understand the nuances of the question and know which to choose, but the whole purpose of using TurboTax is to AVOID having a professional tax preparer! I would also like to have a "Print Page" option as I go through the process. I would sometimes like to be able to print the "2 Year Summary" (among others) that appears, but they don't make it easy. Must do a "screen shot", then print that. All in all, though, I must appreciate the program, because I keep coming back!
What's great about it: Personal info carried over from last year
What's not so great: Every year there are confusing questions for our rental property.

98% painless

The "Interview" technique to sort and enter data in the right places on my return continues to be outstanding and very much appreciated. The tool to price donated items is a true gift. Direct download of data from my broker saves a lot of errors I would have made if I had tried to do it manually. The instructions for printing a copy of my returns could be a bit clearer, but that is a very minor issue for me. Overall the TurboTax process is 98% painless. Even someone who knows nothing about the federal tax code can file a return accurately enough to avoid stressful scrutiny by the IRS. I intend to continue to use TurboTax every year!
What's great about it: Well organized interview to enter data
What's not so great: Wrapup and print directions
Pros: I bought or sold investments
