I have been a TurboTax customer for over a decade. Generally user friendly. Some questions are not easily understood and could be rewritten.
I wish they still had the TurboTax Pro as an option.
What's great about it: Easy to switch between steps and forms
What's not so great: Improvement needed for completing multiple state returns when income is earned in multiple states

Helpful Tax Program
on February 24, 2016

We've been using TurboTax for about 7 or 8 years. Previously, we did our taxes ourselves on paper. We are a one-income family who own our home and have young adult children in college. The first year, it found a tax credit for college tuition I didn't know I could claim, which was a happy surprise! :-)
TurboTax walks us through the steps of inputting our W-2, interest and dividend statements (I don't like to use other programs to input our information, but it also offers to look for them online and autofill the info). The Schedule A for our itemized deductions is also easy to do after the first time of figuring out how it all works. We donate to a number of organizations, and it allows us to enter a list and the amounts of the contribution (or value of goods), which it prints for our records at the end. It walks us through the process of entering our kids' tuition statements, then recommends possible deductions or credits, then allows us to decide which will benefit our family most this year.
The biggest annoyance this year was that I couldn't get the search bar to work at all; every time I searched a form it would stall out and never return the result (it has worked in past years). One of our kids graduated from college this year, and I ended up having to download a W-4 from the IRS website to change our withholding allowances because TurboTax wouldn't load it for me or show it to me. NOT helpful.
Our son is an ACTOR who gets W-2 statements as well as smaller paycheck amounts that he has to claim as his own small business. TurboTax allows him to enter his W-2 paychecks, and he can also claim his non-W-2 income, expenses and mileage used pursuing auditions and acting jobs as a small business on a Schedule C. This was very helpful, although we spent half an hour online trying to figure out the difference between "business" and "commuting" on the mileage screen (they need to be better defined in TurboTax). FYI: if you have a similar situation, business expenses like headshots, resumes and training go at the end of Schedule C in "Other Expenses", not on Schedule A under "Job Expenses" (this issue also took a lot of research to figure out).
TurboTax is generally easy to use, and if you hit a snag, you can click into the online help, which is sometimes instantly helpful, and other times not helpful, and you have to pursue answers elsewhere. When I'm finished filing our tax returns, I copy EVERYTHING that we used doing our taxes and burn it onto a data CD and make a print copy, then delete it all from the computer. The paper and CD copies go into a manila envelope labeled for the year. When I start the next year's tax return, I load last year's files from the CD, then start TurboTax. It's convenient that TurboTax can look on your computer for past tax returns and automatically sets up your return for minimal busywork.
This year, my taxes only took me a few hours to do, including printing, checking and filing. I like the program and will continue to use it rather than paying someone else to do them (which is costly) or wading through the paper and math myself (which is cheaper, but a lot more work).
What's great about it: Fairly simple to walk through the steps; Actor son used it to claim himself as a small business
What's not so great: Couldn't get the search bar to work at all this year

Rental Property Sales
on February 24, 2016

I have used TurboTax for years.
Last year I sold a 'rental' property, and TurboTax made me call that a business in order to enter my net gains on the property.
A rental property is not a always a business. I had major repairs done and I am still not sure if I entered them correctly for this year.
What's great about it: Not much
What's not so great: Very confusing
Pros: I moved

I had deposited money into a Roth IRA account using what is known as a back-door method whereby money is first deposited into a regular IRA and then transferred to a Roth IRA.
The Turbo tax help desk was very helpful in walking me through the steps in Turbo tax so that the numbers would be listed correctly on my tax return.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax help desk was very knowledgeble on taxes
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax since at least 1998. I am an accountant, but Turbo Tax makes it so much easier than filling out the forms by hand. I like the analysis tools too. It is even easier because it imports your info from the prior year. eFiling is a breeze.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

The program walks one through the process and explains in detail areas which may have multiple options. Just got files ready and it told me exactly what I needed.
What's great about it: Very well guided through the navigation of works
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
