Turbo tax user forever
on February 19, 2016

I've been a Turbo Tax user for over 10 yrs. Using this product is like having your own personal accountant. Calculations are always accurate provided you answer the questions properly. You have the option to go step by step an let the program guide you, or if you're a more experienced tax preparer, you can go directly to the different sections and fill in the information without being prompted. You can't go wrong either way. Overall, I think that this is the best tax software on the market.
What's great about it: Very thorough. Asked the right questions
What's not so great: Hard to find one
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I've used Turbo Tax for the last several years for both myself and my sister's family. It's very easy to use and I would recommend it to anyone.
What's great about it: How it walks you through all the different steps
What's not so great: Sometimes the errors can be confusing to fix
Pros: I had a baby

Former year's filing was OK, not great

I will be frank; I waited too long to file online via TurboTax.com for the 2014 tax season for one reason: I knew I had a potential payment from capital gains.
That said, getting myself back on the "on-time" regime again was fairly easy by downloading the 2014 filing software for the Mac platform. It feels and looks just as the online version that I'm used to.
I will hopefully never be late again, but users can feel assurred that that downloadable software for prior years' tax filings is familiar and easy to navigate, just like the online version.
What's great about it: Allows for all of the TurboTax.com online features
What's not so great: I was too late to properly e-file; Confusing steps at times
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo tax really is easy to follow if you have your paperwork in order, priced right, and once you have used it once becomes increasingly easier, as it saves your info. from prior years.
What's great about it: Much cheaper than an accountant, makes you feel like a can doer!
What's not so great: Schedule E--impossible to get rid of car and truck!!

2015 Federal Tax filing

I started using Turbo Tax a couple years ago, and like to do it myself, basically to save on accountant fees. I originally had to use an accountant but once my finances, etc. became simpler I started using Turbo Tax.
Just follow directions and enter information requested and voila you are finished!
What's great about it: Very easy to do, walks you thru.....
What's not so great: Price is a bit high, but less than having it done

Not tailored to complex returns, even Premier

Sold a 2nd home that was NOT a rental and where we enter Gross Proceeds from 1099-S (Box 2) there was no clear place or suggestions of where to enter all the HUD-1 deductions to the seller. Nobody sells at Gross Price. The realtor commission, taxes, stamps, title insurance etc. deduct about 10% from Gross Proceeds. There needs to be instructions and a box to enter all the selling costs that get the net realized sales price down to the HUD-1 level. After much digging one of the message boards said "Add it to basis." I have no idea if IRS wants it that way. Another issue was that balanced funds with a mix of Treasury and Corporate bonds have Treasury interest not taxable to states. There is a box for that, but it is not prominent and there are no reminders "Did you check that" when you get to a state return. I am sure a lot of people forget and pay state tax on Treasury bond income.
What's great about it: Menu-driven good
What's not so great: Doesn't ask/suggest right questions for Investments
Pros: I bought or sold investments
