I would recommend this program to anyone wanting to do their own taxes. I've been using it for over 20 years!
What's great about it: I liked the way I was walked through every deduction possible.
What's not so great: Really no cons!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

It is ridiculous that I have to buy the home and business just for a simple schedule C and stock sales.
Turbo Tax used to be a good value
What's not so great: Too expensive for home and business for simple return!

Audit trigger
on October 17, 2016

The software is very easy to follow. There is a problem with the manner in which you enter your communication expenses on schedule C i.e, telephone. These expenses are reflected as utilities on schedule C which is an alert for IRS. It appears the individual may be deducting their household utilities as an expense which could trigger an audit.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: some expenses labeled falsely

(1) Skipped over SEP and (2) NY confusing
on October 17, 2016
Posted by: Stevb1009
I've been using Turbotax since 2004 and have generally been happy with it; it's good, not perfect. This year I had several problems which I never encountered before:
1. for some reason, it completely skipped over the screen asking about my SEP contribution. I've done this before so I knew that I had to go find it, but it was really hard to track down. had I never used TT, it would have been lost to me.
2. during the federal review, it asked me to put in a comment or explanation on a particular line on form 1116(I think). It did not explain what that was, there were no instructions, it would not allow me to go back to the original screen so that I could see it in context. Also, I could not bookmark this screen and go looking around for the answer. I was trapped: couldn't go forward, couldn't go back. After 30 minutes on the IRS site I think I plugged in a reasonable answer but I'm not sure.
3. also during the federal review, there was another question about the source of health insurance program for an individual freelancer/consultant. however, TT did not clearly state that that was what it was looking for. instead, it just threw a lot of abbreviations at you with no explanation of the yes/no choice.
4. the NY add-on is always bad. Often they just give blank sheets with instructions to "Enter New York Additions or Subtractions." There are no instructions, nor any direction on how to find instructions. What's a New York Addition? A New York Subtraction? still don't know.
5. in the NY add-on, it was nearly impossible to find the place to take only a partial new york refund. the instructions were labyrinthine. It was not obvious and the instructions did not guide you to the answer.
In the past I've always given TT 4 or 5 stars, however, this was the most troublesome version I've ever used. if I had never used TT before, I would have made several critical mistakes. I hope they fix these problems by next year.
What's great about it: Federal is thorough and pretty easy
What's not so great: No support info for new york
Pros: I bought or sold investments

DOESN'T MAXIMIZE COMBINED STATE AND FEDERAL REFUND
on October 17, 2016
Posted by: MaxDNEMax
For all married, dual income couple in Ohio, go back and review 'married, filing separately' and look at the state tax difference. Class anyone??
What's great about it: calculates taxes accurately as a calculator can
What's not so great: missed my maximum refund in ohio by over 1000 by not factoring in state savings
