Sucks

My e-file return was rejected- despite giving the proper information. The email advised to re-open my return and the program would give instruction. It did not. In fact, my return was not even there. Numerous glitches during preparation also.
What's not so great: Glitches

Well worth the money. Easy to use and thorough. I have great confidence in TurboTax.
What's great about it: through. logical.
What's not so great: not always easy to go to specific lines or sections.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Frustrating
on October 17, 2016

While turbo tax shows amounts for broad categories from prior year's returns I did not see a breakout and line item expenses for prior years to compare with current year. Turbo tax starts over and deletes some answers each time a section is revisited. Turbo tax is MUCH more cumbersome and MUCH MUCH more expensive than competing products. I'm switching away from Turbo tax next year for sure!!!
What's great about it: Not much
What's not so great: prior year's info not readily accesible

Overall strong but with a couple of weak spots
on October 17, 2016

Turbotax is a solid program that covers a lot of ground, so it is impressive that it does everything that it does as well as it does. However, I have found a couple of places where it falls short. In its defense, I probably should have an accountant do my taxes at the level of complexity that they are reaching, but I do them myself, so it would be nice if the program could keep up. The specific weak spots are in formulating the 1116 forms for foreign tax credits, which comes up every year because some of my investments pay foreign taxes. The program makes you do a complex workaround, and if you follow the directions it does not actually work. It is complicated by a failure to assign unique titles to different accounts within a single brokerage; my 4 schwab accounts were all named identically, which made it hard to tell which was which, and I had to select a specific one first in order to make the program generate the 1116 forms in the correct order so that the IRS would accept the E-filing. So it tells you to go through the interview once without selecting anything to figure out which account has the largest amount (that's the one that should be selected first). Why the program can't compare the numbers and automatically do that, I have no idea -seems like picking the form with the biggest number on line xx should be pretty straightforward to program. I went through the interview once without selecting either of the 2 accounts in question, but when I came back around a second time to select the correct one, the program only showed me one of the two (the wrong one!). I was left to muddle through in forms rather than in interview mode, and ended up uncertain whether the program was actually calculating the credit appropriately, since it was much less than it had been in previous years. Very frustrating, and I didn't want to delete and repopulate the form as there were carryovers from prior years. I also think that there is a glitch in the Affordable Care Act section, where it forced me to pay a clawback on subsidies for health insurance for my kids because I made less than expected and the system decided they should have been in MediCal and therefore were ineligible for subsidies. It's a defect in the law, but I've been told that the IRS doesn't actually clawback the subsidies in that situation -but turbotax did.
What's great about it: usually clear and straightforward step by step
What's not so great: can't handle certain more complex situations
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Tax Expert Program
on October 17, 2016

On the whole, an excellent program offering maximum return. Wish there was an easy to get some of the less commonly used forms more easily. Found an easier way this year to use "Forms" view for most of the return and go to "Step-by-Step" intermittently. Due to some unusual income situations, had a blip between the forms view of retirement income as a result of the multiple 1099-R forms received. Switching to step view finally got to a page that resolved to my satisfaction. Decided to get the Audit Review this year for the first time. Have used TurboTax for many years, successfully.
What's great about it: Program prepares taxes more closely to a professional preparer than any other. Very complete.
What's not so great: Step-by-Step is cumbersome for someone working with forms for 30 years. Harder to find some forms in "forms" view

One issue with Clergy Sec 107 Housing allowance
on October 17, 2016

Have used TurboTax for years and years. I can't tell you when I started using it. Back in the days of probably DOS.
The last several years I was working with a Firm and so used their software (Drake) because it was a requirement. But used TurboTax to handle some few private clients.
My only problem this year was with the way TurboTax didn't handle the Sec 107 Housing Allowance. We did a work around but I am not particularly happy with how that looks, and expect a form letter from IRS concerning that workaround. That needs to be fixed. (Relates to use of a Form 1099-MISC that includes the HA in line 7)
What's great about it: Works find, if you follow the Interview, you should have no problems
What's not so great: for an experienced practitioner, the Interview can be slow going
