Getting Better
on September 29, 2016

I have been using TT since the 1990's. It has come a long way. The information and support is really a big plus. I requested help with a problem and they were spot on and quick.
The ability to bring forward information from prior returns has really improved as well, but can be better.
I would like to see a spreadsheet like table where all the information could be put in and TT just transfers that information to the Tax Forms for the return. That way you only need to enter the information into one place and the information can be stored for next year for easy review.
What's great about it: More information brought forward from prior years.
What's not so great: No tables to store information requested frequently like car information.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Great Software that I have been using for years. The cost is a little pricey compare to others but I like the accuracy of the retrurns, the easy to follow instructions and professional support.
I do think the charge to file the State Return should be eliminated
What's great about it: Been using this software for years. It is easy to follow, user friendly and the support service is great.
What's not so great: Charge for efiling State Return should be eliminated or at least reduced. Other tax software charges nothing.

Rather have a tooth pulled

I can't imagine buying TurboTax again. After using it for at least 10 years I found this last version so frustrating. I would have to wait for the program to settle and walk away to get a prompt to stay put. It was a game of "wack a mole" to try to enter the forms. I'll hire my accountant as it's worth if not to see this mess again.
What's great about it: All the forms were there
What's not so great: Program would twitch and jump from one form to another. Some fields once filled could not be edited

Entering a field in Schedule C-specific to automobile use for business caused TT to create a Depreciation form when Depreciation of the asset was not needed. Instructions should clarify what to do if you only use an automobile for part of the year but do not sell/dispose of the vehicle after use.
AND trying to find the method to actually call for help was WAY TOO DIFFICULT AND CONVOLUTED - IT TOOK ME MORE TIME TO FIND HOW TO CALL AND THE NUMBER THAN TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
What's great about it: Overall worked as anticipated.
What's not so great: Problem with one area that required two calls for support to get resolved.

Long-time user

I've been using TurboTax for more than a decade, and will do so again in 2016. Generally it's an easy to use interface, and my CPA who reviews my final documents hasn't found any deductions that it misses.
I realize it's a minor point and not applicable to many taxpayers, but the handling of the backdoor Roth is byzantine and required going online to find instructions to make it work properly.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use, familiar interface, like the fact that I can do my Schedule C easily
What's not so great: Don't like how program handles backdoor Roth
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very comprehensive,but more guidance needed

Overall I am impressed and very satisfied. However, my mistaken entry in foreign income (subsequently set to $0) resulted in an error in "Review" asking for form 2555. Last year's tax return included form 1116 for Foreign Tax Credit. It took me a long time to figure out that there was such a form but that it didn't need to be filed, and was therefore "hidden". It took me a long time to make sure I entered re-characterization of an IRA roll-over correctly. More guidance from TurboTax on these subjects would be helpful. (I solved the "2555 error" by deleting the 2555 in Forms, I discovered the form 1116 by searching in Forms for "Foreign Tax Credit", and accomplished the re-characterization through time consuming trial and error.)
What's great about it: Covers all subjects, imports 3rd party forms, syncs with Quicken
What's not so great: Simplify guidance

A Trusted Resource for over 25 Years
on October 1, 2016

I have used TurboTax for over 25 years. Before that I did my own taxes by hand or, on a few occasions, I had them professionally done. Even when someone else prepares your taxes, you are still responsible. The professionals do make errors. I figured, if I have to review the return, I might as well prepare it as well. The worst part about taxes, is getting the information together. After that, TurboTax makes entry easy and understandable. Sometimes they explain it better than IRS.
What's great about it: Easy to use, Trusted Resource
What's not so great: None
