Disappointed in Sales Tactic
on April 18, 2016

Your information was not straight straight forward. I saw that you wanted a charge for my state form and figured the school district would go with it. Luckily, I clicked continue to find out that I had to mail my school district form. So here I am, leaving the house at 9:30 pm to take my last form to the mail box. I would not have cared if I knew this from the get go. Just disappointed since this whole thing is so stressful anyway.
What's great about it: As always my returns were completed easily and quickly.
What's not so great: State has a cost and School District was not e-filed at all.

What I'd fix
on April 18, 2016

I like TurboTax. I am not an accountant, so every year at tax time is the only time I mess with tax-related content, and then just my family's. While I like most things about TurboTax, I find the IRA section to be nutty. Why not simply have a front screen that let's me pick check boxes for what to maximize, then have Turbo Tax come back with the best mix I can have. For example, if my wife only wants to fund her Roth, but I want to fund my Roth first, and then my traditional IRA, let me tell TurboTax that, and then have it come back and tell me what dollar amounts I can put where. Instead, I have to pound through it once, find out some numbers, then go back to the start, put in the values, and run through again. Yet the program knows how much I CAN put first to the Roth, so tell me up front. If I prioritize the non-Roth first, TT should be able to do that math, too, up front.
Maybe I am missing something, but it just seems like a pain to do the IRA mix the way TT has it set up.
What's great about it: The handshake to most, but not all of my online accounts. Also, the importation of the prior year's return.
What's not so great: The IRA section still is still a pain in the backside.

A few more issues this year
on April 18, 2016

I've been using TurboTax for as long as I can remember. This was the first year that I wasn't able to see last year's return simply by opening last year's file. This seems like a bug and a rather serious one. (What happened was that TT insisted on converting that file to a 2015 file and when I did that, it didn't seem to have last years information in it).
There were a few errors that TurboTax wanted me to fix (these had to do with calculating the penalty for insufficient tax deductions last year). In a couple of situations, I couldn't proceed without entering a value, but TT gave me little help as to what the problem was or even where it was. It mentioned a form and a line but that didn't mean much. I was able to fix it by going to the form view. But it would have been nice to get more options in the interactive session.
What's great about it: As usual TurboTax got me through my Federal and State (MA) forms.
What's not so great: There were some very minor glitches this year
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Help section needs help in order to be more useful. You are really on your own to figure out any questions. Updated format and questions were more difficult than prior years when related to company stock plans. Very convenient to use same program year-after-year.
What's great about it: Convenience of using same program year-after-year
What's not so great: Help section and Community
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used this program for several years and it has always been accurate. I just wish the cost was less and e-filing the state return was cheaper or free. Free is good
What's great about it: I hope it is accurate
What's not so great: Wish the state e-file was free or cheaper
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
