Would like a Replay button
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: Powertool
The one feature that has been needed for many years is the ability to repeat a step-by-step section without needing to re-answer various questions. It would be nice if there was a new navigation button that made it clear that the user wanted to replay the step(s) without changing anything, or have to remember whether they previously answered "Yes/No" to questions.
For the purposes of reviewing previous data, once a section has been completed and the user revisited that section, add a "Replay" (or "Browse") button to the choices. The user can quickly skip past the screens as needed, but be able to retrace their steps.
What's great about it: The addition of the named flags is very helpful for going back to revisit areas.
What's not so great: When revisiting some areas, previous check boxes or questions are not defaulted to the response previously given.

Couldn't live without it

I really couldn't live without this, and I don't think a tax preparer would be able to do any better. Does a great job of handling the year to year carry over issues. Also, this was my first year running a small business and it handled everything there like a champ!
What's great about it: Handles all the AMT mess and carry overs from previous years. Handled my first time small business
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Grateful for the interviews

I do not appreciate the fact that I have to pay for download, do my return and then file an amended by mail so I can file my 1099C forms. Still easier than strictly by hand, but with all the foreclosures, bankruptcy, etc happening in our country, the software should include these things.
What's great about it: walks you through almost everything
What's not so great: does not include 1099-C
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Pulling my hair

As a member of the clergy, I find the IRS rules and the filling in of Turbo Tax info to be very confusing and difficult to navigate. Since I end up paying self-employment tax, there is little support info or clarification about what to put into TT regarding deductions for self-employment, how to treat housing allowance versus actual expenses, etc. My pay and expenses are pretty much the same from year to year, and I got a small refund in 2014, but had to pay taxes in 2015 when I was expecting a larger refund. What changed? I have no way of knowing if I filled out the blanks differently, or if the calculations changed due to a tax increase or rules change.
What's great about it: automated placement of information on forms
What's not so great: Don't know what changed since previous year. Unclear what to put in some boxes. Clergy filings are really difficult.

Works well enough

I've been using TurboTax Home & Business for several years and it seems to me that in the interest of making the program simpler and quicker to use, it has lost a level of detail that helps the user maximize tax deductions. I always go with the step-by-step UI so theoretically I should be accessing the highest level of program guidance but there are missing pieces. I think this is particularly true for employees who work almost exclusively from a home office and for other "gig" contractors.
For instance, I've had to call on my own knowledge and search efforts to track down how to deduct items like Medicare Advantage premiums and some home office expenses.
What's great about it: simple
What's not so great: mediocre search results and program help / directions

Fairly Easy
on April 18, 2016

This is fairly easy to use but sometimes navigating to the section you need is not easy. Would be nice if there was a search feature that would take you to the area you want.
What's great about it: Walks you through each step you need
What's not so great: If you want to go back and review you have to answer the same questions you already answered. Very annoying.

Another good tax experience
on April 18, 2016

I have used TT for years. If you're new to it, it's easy to let TT walk you through all tax possibilities. That way you know you are covering everything. If you are more experienced, you have the option of selecting just the areas that you know are relevant. But either way, TurboTax does not forget anything. The final review picks up details missed in the process. All very thorough and reassuring.
What's great about it: TurbTax doesn't forget. Choice of TT walk thru or personal selection.
What's not so great: Not all information from previous tax years is brought forward when starting return.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
