Works well overall, few shortcomings
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: Cybermichael
Works well overall, some improvements (including Help) from the previous version.
Can use a few improvements:
1. Don't ask me questions I already answered and force me to go through extra steps. Add an option to change answers instead.
2. Streamline health-care related items, there are too many steps.
3. Have editable summary pages where to change details if needed. I can do it on the individual Tax forms, but those are 80% irrelevant to my situation and hence unfilled.
What's great about it: Familiar interface, better help functionality than previous vesions
What's not so great: Unable to sort 1099-MISC payees, convoluted HSA interface
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Make "Take Standard Deduction" an Early Choice
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: EvelynVaughn
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Give us the early option of just freakin' taking the standard deduction. "We see that for 20 years, after answering 8 hours worth of grueling questions about your mileage and your mortgage, that you always did better by taking the standard deduction. Has anything changed this year, or would you like to save time and effort and just take the standard deduction again?"
Seriously -- I literally wept AND wailed over getting various details right, only to realize that I could have just said "yeah, give me the $6300 deduction and let's move on to my home business."
I've used Turbo Tax every year for almost 2 decades -- why does it not say, "You did this last year, wanna do it next year?" Instead, EVERY YEAR it seems surprised that I'm a novelist and that I rent out a room of my house. There should be a more seamless transition from year to year.
The "help" isn't always very helpful -- "answer forums" from other users is not expert advice. Also, sometimes when you click the "want to know more," the box that opens just repeats what it just said: X is Y, or Y is X. Do you want to know more? (Click box). X is Y. However, Y is X.
I very much appreciate that TurboTax saves often. 2 days in to the process, my computer froze and rebooted -- Windows had decided it needed to update RIGHT THEN. I honestly fear how I would have reacted if my work had been lost.
PLEASE make sure that if something goes by two names, you are clear ("real estate taxes may be called property taxes," or vice versa). I used Google far more than I should have.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE THIS FRIENDLIER? Seriously -- I nearly had a nervous breakdown, sweating the small stuff. Is there some way the prompts can be written in a more friendly/ encouraging way?
What's great about it: Audit Defense, Saves often, They Know Their Stuff, Do Taxes from Home on Your Own Schedule (pre Tax Day, of course)
What's not so great: No easy glimpse of tax forms, "help" often provided by other users instead of experts, did not transfer last year's work

Helped simplify filing!
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: shellydvt
I have been a repeat customer for many years. I don't believe I have filed taxes without TurboTax since I was able to complete the 1040-EZ long ago. The software makes the process far less painful.
What's great about it: Easy step-by-step guides; option to skip unnecessary sections; repeat customer
What's not so great: Had better luck with some state-related questions on the web vs TurboTax help menus; overall very little cons

Most Everything a CPA would use to file your taxes
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: dinkage
All the questions a CPA or tax advisor would ask, in the privacy and convenience of your home. Though we've yet to have one, if we had any remaining questions, I'd probably still prefer using the TurboTax flows to gather documents before paying high hourly CPA fees.
What's great about it: Intuitive, Relevant, Logical, Detailed, Thorough
What's not so great: Trying to review or edit entires in other than original flows can delete entries

I have used this product for many years, and it keeps getting better and better:-). The links to searchable help and answers are really easy to operate, and made us feel comfortable about tackling various issues. Thanks for your efforts!
What's great about it: Organized, clear navigation, big enough font, easy to find answers
What's not so great: Sometimes unsure how to find prior screenshot of info

TurboTax Never Fails
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: JeffCA
Another TurboTax year done. That is probably 20+ years of returned done now. Glad to see they brought back the password feature. Most of the screens were intuitive like before but they moved some things around and it seemed odd. I continue to like the interview process and the ability to switch to the tax form on demand. Helps, to keep track as to why and what is really being asked. The stock section has been vastly improved. I do wish they could provide more insight as to when limits are hit due to income and how to avoid the limits. Still a great product, but please only small tweaks in the future.
What's great about it: Still easy to use
What's not so great: Moved business deductions and expenses around so a bit confusing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TT - OK but not Great
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: BradM807
Had to search for answers for confusing areas not well supported by TT. Forum not a help to confusing specific questions. No 800 number...??
Had to search to input K-1 data and estimated taxes paid, seems as though those areas were hiding...
Not impressed by TT Premier.
What's great about it: Fairly Comprehensive
What's not so great: Not enough helps for confusing areas.
