What's great about it: ability to try different options with IRA and HSA contributions to maximize return
What's not so great: takes a long time to get through sections that don't apply to my circumstance
Pros: I moved

Multiple Returns Handled Easily
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: JerryWill
I submit multiple returns for ourselves, our son, an estate, a business, and two trusts using two TurboTax products. All are easy to do and the products provide direction. While it takes many, many, hours to do all the returns it would be measured in weeks instead of hours without the products and I wouldn't be as confident in the results.
What's great about it: Ease of Use, Info Filled in From Prior Year
Pros: I bought or sold investments

turbo Tax Saves me again
on April 17, 2016

I have a regular job, w-2 form and I own a house, no other dependents or special situations. However in 2015 I started a part-time business, and I had some expenses I wanted to add to the tax return. Gas mileage and hotel/airfare expenses were easy to find; the other expenses options (job related expenses, equipment (computer) were not shown under Business Tab. But I knew what I was looking for, in my case "educational expenses"- and when I searched Turbo Tax, I got proper instructions. I find the placement of "job related expenses" a bit confusing, because they are placed under personal tab, instead of business tab, and because it talks about teachers only, which made me skip it first time I followed the steps. Often times when someone starts a business, they encounter educational expenses, so it will make sense to make them part of "other expenses situations".
I found it very easy to jump back and forth among sections.
Overall it was a great experience and great refund :). I started the taxes thinking I owe money, in the end I got a nice refund.
What's great about it: very easy to use and find answers to questions
What's not so great: Business expenses are not so easy to find, but use search

Long-time user of Turbo Tax
on April 17, 2016

As a former IRS agent (and data processing professional), I pay particular attention to filing an accurate return. Tax laws are complicated and ever-changing. Turbo Tax makes it easy and straightforward...and provides the convenience of transferring last years information (taxpayer ids, address, previous revenue and deduction sources) to the current year.
What's great about it: Excellent step-by-step procedure and very user friendly
What's not so great: Nothing major
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Some of the questions were difficult to understand especially in the medical question area. It took a lot of research to enter the correct information. It would be great to get better responses form Turbo Tax. Otherwise the program is great but you need to be organized before you start.
I have used Turbo Tax for the last several years and found Turbo Tax very helpful with the changing tax laws.
What's great about it: Asked a lot of questions that were very important to the final outcome of the returns.
What's not so great: It would have been great to be able to print pages as I progressed just to understand what was happening with the info.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Tax Form Updater
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: WilsonSEASTL
Tax form updater did not work (rebooted many times over a week and it never worked). Had to manually update federal forms via help/download. Also had to separately purchase Missouri and Illinois state form updates. However, had to call support/help, because state downloads were not available in downloads section.
What's not so great: Did not work

Hooray for TurboTax
on April 17, 2016

A lot of info is carried forward from the previous year. This is especially helpful for depreciable assets.
We use our autos in two Sched C activities and two Sched E activities. TurboTax requires us to enter all the info on each auto four separate times. This is ridiculous!
To my surprise, some info was not carried forward from last year; e.g., some 1099 interest and dividend payers! Why did I have to reenter the payer info? Does TurboTax assume all payers provide electronic access to their 1099s?
It would be good if TurboTax took into account all info previously entered before asking questions. Instead it asks some questions about areas for which it already knows the answer - this is a problem cause 1) it wastes one's time reading and considering the question, and 2) it makes me wonder if I misunderstand something or if I entered some info incorrectly. E.G., TurboTax asked me about contributing to a traditional IRA even though I'm ineligible because of age!
What's great about it: Carried forward most important info from previous year; Asked important questions
What's not so great: Doesn't handle autos used for more than one Sched C & Sched E activity
Pros: I bought or sold investments
