THANK YOU INTUIT. BOTH FOR THE GREAT SOFTWARE, AND ALSO FOR THE AUDIT DEFENSE. IF YOU RUN A SMALL BUSINESS, PURCHASE THE AUDIT DEFENSE. IT IS GREAT INSURANCE WHEN THE IRS SENDS YOU A LETTER WITH QUESTIONS.
What's great about it: I'VE USED TURBOTAZ FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, GREAT SOFTWARE
What's not so great: TELL POPLE NOT TO ENTER 0 WHEN THERE IS NO ENTRY. LEAVE IS BLANK

I go back to Parsons Technology doing Turbo Tax filings and they get easier and more user friendly each year and you have a low possibility of an audit using the products correctly.

Good Product gets better

Having used TurboTax since 1988, I am happy to see the software doing more each year. That said, the software could do more to simplify the filing of NYS and NYC1127 forms, where there is business income and the taxpayer is a NJ resident.
What's great about it: Handles NYC1127
What's not so great: Could do more for IT-203-F and NYC1127

Turbo Tax Home & Business Glitches

I found it easy to move between Step-By-Step and Forms data entry. I moved to a different location so I had two home office entries. When I completed them the software said I was not allowed to claim a home office deduction this year. In doing the final review it flagged the Home Office deduction forms and needed an amount divided between the two home offices. There was no help in the software and I had to calculate the percentage of the year for each office and multiply it by the deduction for each home office and hope I did it correctly. I expected the software to lead me through this. Then at this point I found that the Home Office Deduction was now added to my Tax Forms for filing. I found this worry-some in my preparing my taxes. Also each year I file 2555 to exempt my income as I am overseas. The software shows a 2555 in the forms, but never files it for me. I have to go to the form and enter it on my own and guess what amounts to enter so it properly inserts it into the 1040 Form and includes it when I file my return. I never know if I did it correctly and it troubles me that I see a negative Gross Adjusted income on my 1040, yet nothing is flagged so I have to assume it is correct. In a previous year I had to amend my return later because the Turbo Tax software doesn't automatically pick up on the fact that filed it in the previous year and run me through it Step-By-Step, It simply leaves it out of my return and is is up to me to discover this. Also my self employment income on a Form-1099-MISC combined with a separate cash amount I received as a total income on the Schedule C, but it did not break this down anywhere to show me this was done - the interview process entered it and didn't give me visibility of this process when manually reviewing my Taxes before filing.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate and file electronically
What's not so great: Glitches in Home Office deductions & Overseas Exemption

Time Saver

I LOVE TurboTax. The time saving aspect from automatically picking up information form the previous returns is great! It remembers carry-overs that I may have forgotten and suggests deductions. They fixed the K-1 issues so they are simple to use now too.
I would like It's Deductible to get streamlined now so we can add Charity addresses, valuation type, and acquisition type when donations are done and have that data import into TurboTax.
What's great about it: All the data from previous years automatically transfers in, files import for accuracy, and TurboTax finds deductions!
What's not so great: Data from It's deductible overlaps Quicken import and doesn't include IRS required details.

Some parts unfriendly

Turbo tax asks questions from downloads that are not available .
It is very difficult to override when it is wrong like on NYC commuter tax.
In someways it would have been easier to prepare the return by hand.

Can do EASY

My return is 75 pages. I was an Accountant in my early days (16 thru 22), the tax code was no more than an inch thick. Now the Code is about 2 feet thick.....NO way could I do this today without computerized help!
What's great about it: leads thru all portions of return
What's not so great: none
