Not smart enough
on April 14, 2016

I gained ownership of real property after the life tenant passed away. turbotax had no way to deal with this situation when the property was sold. I was assured by real tax professionals that I could deduct part of the capital loss after calculating sale price and actual basis. I was forced to fix the program's shortcomings by overriding the actual forms. To add insult to injury, it would not let me efile the federal return because I made overrides. I am totally disgusted. And this was with the Home and Office version, not the cheap one.
What's not so great: Couldn't handle specific situation.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I am sorry.

Most of the help was not of much value in answering my questions.
The State e-filing was nothing but a joke. Really!!! That is quite a fee for the service. But then the program would not let me pay for my filing, or that of my two sons or my mothers state return. So I had to paper file all four. Not too convenient to say the least.
The printing of the returns also adds to the confusion. It's probably just me but it would be nice if they printed out - last page first - so they were in correct order when done printing.
What's great about it: Liked the step-by-step methodology and general format.
What's not so great: It seemed that Turbo Users were as befuddled as I was on too many items.

The only way to go
on April 14, 2016

I have been using Turbo Tax since 2007 and have had great success in all aspects. I have filed returns each year, had to do Amended returns for other reasons, and am able to go to all of the saved files when needed during the year.
As a true testimony, I asked a Tax Accountant if I should have him professionally prepare my taxes as they are a little more complex than normal filings because I do both the Business and the Personal each year. He stated "if you are using Turbo Tax you are good to go". He indicated that they go through the same process, so save the money.
What's great about it: Easy to use and carry information from prior years
What's not so great: None
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not as straight forward as advertised!

Overall a decent program, but far from the ease you advertise. Same questions have to be answered repeatedly. Making changes is really not easy, since you are never really sure if the program changed everything as you wanted. Deductions that are essentially not taking due to other offsets are left in return, which just raises questions! Quite honestly, the entire program needs a re-do. Much like the tax code.
May consider another provider next year.
What's great about it: Step by step input, does all the math and generally puts things in proper places.
What's not so great: Difficult to make changes. Not easy to do what if's! Have to re-input data and answer same questions often.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Issues that should be fixed
on April 14, 2016

It would be much easier for me to enter amounts in schedule B if there was the ability to alphabetize the companies that sent 1099s. One year I actually entered the amounts from a company twice because I didn't realize it was on my list from the prior year, and it appeared once on schedule B and once on the addendum to it, and neither you nor the IRS caught that and I had to file an amended return.
Also, there should be a way to go to forms and come back to the same place in EasyStep without going back through several pages.
It appears that all of the worksheets are actually filed. Is this the case?
What's great about it: I like being able to import and compare prior year
What's not so great: No alphabetization of Schedule B
Pros: I bought or sold investments
