John P.'s Review

I used to do our taxes by hand each year. While the calculations were laborious, and I had to figure the taxes in different ways, in the end I felt that I had a clear understanding of how the system worked.
However, the speed and ease of using TurboTax and the fact that the federal and state returns are accurate convinced me that I was much better off using it.
What's great about it: Time-saving advantage of having last year's filing to compare with this year's and having W-2 information pre-populated.
What's not so great: Can't actually see the calculations, but I'll just have to trust TurboTax to do the right thing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

IRS overload

I buy the program so that I semi- do it myself, since it takes me as long to do as waiting for the tax preparer and I have to get everything ready anyway. However, now that I am retired from my regular job but also do real estate part-time, the program is a little weak in that area. Real estate agents are not really employed by their brokers but are more like private contractors - however you can only be under one broker at a time, and all the listings actually belong to the broker. Your program doesn't really define that too well - and if you are considered self employed then, whose name do you use and ID do you use? A little confusing, as are retirement earnings and stock earnings. And of course the state program is really confusing! A really big gripe is why I have to pay to efile the state program. That is really annoying.
What's great about it: does the calculations for you and has a lot of prompts
What's not so great: doesn't explain some things very well, esp contractor status, etc
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have been a turbo tax user for over 8 years. I don't know why anyone wouldn't use it. As more import options get added, everything almost completely filled itself out.
What's great about it: Easy to follow questions, and overall status with running total
What's not so great: Once you answer a specific question, it sometimes becomes difficult to revisit every question
Pros: I bought or sold investments
