The business section of home and business program made fiiing business and personal easy.
Major problems:
When you download information regarding stocks from outside companies, there can be problems. For instance they may provide a sale date and value and no cost bases. This can aqppear as one hugh capital gain. Anything that goes from zero to $$$ should be flagged.
K1s are very difficult and time consuming. The compaies responsible for issuing these things often report the data as late as in April. There directions can be difficult to follow. 1) Some have various sources of income requirng these K1s to be split into two documents. There must be a easier why to do these. If the K1 needs to be split, can the whole thing be entered at once (e.g. information for income source 1 and information for source 2) and then have it automatically split into two? Then, it won't be necessary to run through the program twice. Perhaps they are too complicated to do that smoothly. The Turbotax guidence related to how to correct errors in K1s often needs a more advanced knowledge to accomplish successfully.
The software locked up a few times as I switched from automatic entry to typing changes directly on the tax form to correct errors. No major problem, but I would have lost newly entered data if I did not save frequently.
There were some issues with the State return. 1# My first time through showed me some sold secruities that needed some dates included. When, I ran through the program again, this did not come up again. The rerun never went through all aspects of the state return #MA) the second time through. The audit feature said everything was OK although I never entered those dates during the first pass. 2) I have tax exempt interest. Some is tax exempt for State and Fed, and some is just Fed. I divide this when doing the Federal return. However, there is no way to review this when doing the State return to assure that I did the split correctly. It just indicates the interest subject to Sate tax. I would love to look at State and Fed listings to double check that I did this properly while in the State return.

Room for Improvement

I like TurboTax (mainly Home and Business versions) and it is convenient to use it with Quicken. I have used both for well over twenty years. However, I have been frustrated by TurboTax to the point of considering using other tax software on occasion. It is particularly annoying to me that I have to re-calculate a portion of my previous years federal taxes due to NY State Refunds. Why can't this be done automatically, maybe with the answering of some questions if necessary? I also believe that the reference material should be improved and readily available from the program.
What's great about it: Ease of doing and re-doing taxes, choice of step by step or forms
What's not so great: Having to manually re-calculate previous years taxes due to state refunds when having used Turbo Tax each year.

I have multiple royalty producing activities that are integral to my consulting business. I found it difficult to sort through how to assign business expenses since the royalty payments are taxed at a different rate. The tax code is very complex in this area and the program doesn't make it easy to sort this out. I had an accountant go through and he was satisfied so I hope I am ok.
What's great about it: Directed Questions very helpful
What's not so great: The deductions between business and personal are complex to figure out
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments, I moved

Not so great

Many problems this year. Not sure if it is due to having a mac. Many times it would go into "calculating" mode and never stop spinning. I would then have to manually shut down the program to stop and restart. Upon restart, it had made the calculation. But that was not good! I am seriously thinking of switching tax programs.
What's great about it: takes all previous info, makes it simple to transfer
What's not so great: did not work well this year on my mac

2015 Return

I have increasing confidence in TurboTax.
Easier to use each year...I'm getting better at it.
Not sure my settings were correct on my Windows 10 computer to optimize TurboTax help screens. Had trouble accessing the help screens. They went straight to the task bar instead of opening to the desktop.
Otherwise, all went well.
What's great about it: Covers all applicable topics. Easier to use each year.
What's not so great: Not sure my computer settings were correct to optimize access to help screens
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have been using Turbo tax for a long time with a short hiatus when I tried my hand at my own business I hired a professional to prepare my taxes. Then I found they used turbo tax so went back to doing my own. This app makes it so easy to do one's taxes and saving all the returns to a PDF is so much better than paper. I did some how miss one issue a few years ago when I went back to a real job and automatically made the full deduction amount to a Roth account even though I didn't qualify. This year I noticed much more up front notice that I did not qualify for any IRA/Roth deductions.
What's great about it: Quick and Easy to complete both Federal and State Returns
What's not so great: Confusing, for me, info re; K1 fund bought as part of IRA account

I've used Turbo Tax for years, and it continues to get easier to use every year. You don't have to worry about forms or tax law, you just answer questions and all necessary documents are filled out and ready to file for you.
What's great about it: Easy
What's not so great: Can't think of any
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
