some forms had problems in that lines and numbers did not appear orderly and were way out of line????????

Reliable, Accurate Product!

Used Turbo Tax for many years. Returns were never subject to audit and I am confident they were filed correctly. Step-by-step question process makes tax filing simple. Even multiple state returns and complex deductions are handled efficiently
What's great about it: Easy to understand
What's not so great: Wish more than one state product was included free
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Step by Step it is Done correctly

I have used Turbo Tax most of my adult life. I could have been one of the original Turbo Tax users.
Every year it seems to take a task that gets harder and makes it much simpler to use. I do not feel the need to turn my return over to a professional with how complete Turbo Tax is when you purchase the type of program for individual need.
What's great about it: Use of the various walk through items is a great reminder
What's not so great: Hard at times to find the information that I needed to correct.

Saved me during an audit - only one in my life and hope I never had another one. When all said and done the IRS initially wanted $50,000. When it was over my original return was accepted with no payment and no penalty.
What's great about it: Audit proctection - had an audit owed $0

quality declined, incomplete for ex-pat filers

I've used TurboTax for a decade at least (I think much longer). For the past seven years I've lived internationally, and I've had on-and-off quality/incompleteness problems with TurboTax. This year for the first time I've been self-employed overseas, and basically TurboTax is not usable for a self-employed overseas person who has ever revoked the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. (For example, TurboTax does not support a taxpayer who uses the Foreign Housing Exclusion/Deduction but not the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion). I encountered confusion, bugs, extremely difficult to back my way out of cul-de-sacs created by poor workflow in the program.
Also, as a 2-state filer (a resident state in the US and a second, non-resident state), there are quality problems with TurboTax's implementation. TurboTax says to fill out the non-resident state first, but the program should know these complexities and work them out regardless of the order in which the user does the work - we use TurboTax exactly because it automates the crushing amount of knowledge that one must have to prepare taxes correctly.
If you "do something wrong" in TurboTax, either in the Step-by-Step interview or in Forms mode, TurboTax will not cleanly let you re-do those steps; you have to manually clean up by both deleting any Forms that were created (regardless whether you created them manually or TurboTax created them from Interview questions), and then also re-run the entirety of the related Step-by-Steps. Otherwise, weird things happen - forms come back after you delete them, out-of-date information from a deleted form or a re-run part of the Step-by-Step re-appear.
I also encountered bugs in the process of purchase/filing, where TurboTax got stuck in its mind that I was going to file my non-resident second State with TurboTax, when it turned out that TurboTax couldn't do that for me. I worked around this (as I've still not got an answer from TurboTax on this problem) by doing a clean install of TurboTax on a second computer. But of course not everyone has a second computer. And nobody should have to do this.
I am sincerely disappointed in Intuit and TurboTax this year. This product was not ready for the market to which it is sold (Home & Business, in theory supporting us ex-pats).
Next year I have to look for an alternative. I don't have these tens of hours to waste!

My tax situation is complex because I have to file my world wide income in both Canada and the US. It takes me days, but I muddle through as best I can.
There are 1 million US citizens in Canada who have to file dual returns. I wish TurboTax Canada and TurboTax US would get together and come up with some cross border cooperation.
What's great about it: exhaustive questioning
What's not so great: Difficult to file foreign income and taxes paid.
