Easy Job of Doing My Taxes
on March 29, 2016

I like the fact that TurboTax remembers my carry-overs from previous years and it is quite intuitive when entering my information. With "fix errors", it is virtually impossible to make a mistake. Also, it is very easy to go back and edit prior entries when you receive updated 1099's.
What's great about it: TurboTax will carry all information forward from prior years returns
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Used Turbotax Deluxe with State for years. Now to enter LLC or S-corp expenses, I need to buy a more expensive "business" program.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: extra software cost for business expenses

Love the way this system compares prior year info and transfers basic data into new current year reports.
What's great about it: complete system with excellent way to review prior to submission
What's not so great: the Fed's make this so complecated - not Turbo Tax
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Disappointed

I find that over the last several years the ease of use has diminished. Moving from the interview portion to the forms portion might seem easy but trying to change information on the individual forms is quite difficult . . . very hard to override the system. At least I am familiar enough to know how things are to "flow" and can check that my changes have recalculated. Unfortunately, there is no longer a "recalculate" feature. Seems to be overloaded on things they want to sell you instead of making things easier.
What's great about it: Thorough questions
What's not so great: Ease of use

Easy to Prepare

I have been using TurboTax for over 10 years and have found it to be very comprehensive and easy to use. I really like the way it walks you through the process and identifies items to look at that I never would have thought of. The only issue I have is trying to get an on-line answer can be difficult in that the input screen is not that user friendly; i.e. you have a limited number of characters in the first entry and if you need more space you have to enter it in a separate section; in addition, if you need to insert something, the input sometimes jumps to the end of the section.
What's great about it: Step-by-step process easy to follow, identified items I never thought of
What's not so great: Format to ask a question and get feedback not user friendly.

2016 Review

Pros: Makes it pretty easy to step thru the endless forms and questions. Does the math for you. Generally carries numbers from one place to another. Propagates State returns with Federal info, saving reentry. Con1) Hard to navigate to specific places in Easy Step without stepping thru pages you already saw. Program erases the info that you just entered- so if you step back 3-4 pages, you answer the same questions again and again. Once you answer the questions, the answers should stay even if you revisit that page. You could have an "edit" button appear when a page is revisited that already has information on it. Con2) Ohio locality taxes are not filed and there is no error message or reminder that Ohio residents have to file RITA themselves on the RITA website & can't use turbotax. Con3) There should be an autosave of data entered that goes back at least 4-5 iterations on a rolling basis even if the user forgets to hit "save" often. If you are entering data from a CD version and happen to go to the website for something, its easy to accidentally load an upgrade and wipe out all of your existing data (happened to me). Then you are stuck. Would be far better if there were some "TTworkfile1" and "TTworkfile2"saved every minute or so. Then when you increment up to TT#6, just save it over #1 and repeat the cycle. That way, users would not lose more than a couple of minutes if they do something wrong. If these files appear in order of relative age, the user can easily select the correct one to load.
What's great about it: Step thru the questions, do the math automatically, fill in blanks
What's not so great: After the first pass thru, the questions need to be answered again and again and again. Ohio RITA incomplete
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I've been using TurboTax from when it first came out and love it. Each year I see improvements to a already very good product.
What's great about it: Very easy to use and fast
What's not so great: Some times you will need to step through easystep to get back to your last completed section step
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
