The process for filling out the Schedule C is easy and informative. Helpful brief explanations throughout.

A nightmare to struggle through.

I would have been better off doing my return by hand since I need to file a combined State and separate federal returns. The way TurboTax handles community property allocation is archaic. You may as well not even have a tax program. Very disappointing. Also does not have warning for reaching or exceeding income limits for IRA contributions.....this should be automatic!
What's great about it: Easy to find exact forms
What's not so great: Doesn't handle 8958 Community Property form very well at all, instructions minimal at best

Good, but difficult to return to step-by-step
on March 13, 2016

In addition to the difficultly of having to step through the entire step-by-step process to review prior data, TurboTax doesn't keep all your elections, so if you're not careful to re-enter a check box, it may wipe out your prior entry.
What's great about it: does what it supposed to
What's not so great: have to step through long step-by-step process just to review prior data entered
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not Ready for The Future (Betterment, Wealthfront)
on March 13, 2016

TurboTax is great... but hasn't kept up with the times. Although it works with new online investment platforms such as Betterment and Robinhood, it can't handle the 1000+ transactions that occur when accounts are tax optimized. The folks over at Intuit need to rewrite their software so that it functions less like Flash (Having a huge section of the data hinder performance throughout the program) and more native so that it can handle large transactions.
What's great about it: Open to new platforms like Betterment and Robinhood
What's not so great: Clunky software that can't handle large imports
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Easier tax preparation
on March 13, 2016

I've used TurboTax for a number of years now. It makes tax preparation easier and does much of tedious work for me.
I like that it imports last year's tax numbers, both to provide basic information and as a comparison for this year.
I also like that I can visit sections out-of-order. The "flags" feature is a helpful addition. Unfortunately, when going back to a page, I still get asked some interview questions again without my previous answer being defaulted.
I love being able to import W-2s and particularly 1099-DIVs. That saves a lot of time and frustration.
I was disappointed to see that I could no longer use the Deluxe Edition to file a return for my small side business, but had to just two editions up at twice the price. Last year, we saw that change begin but Intuit apologized for it and corrected it in Deluxe Edition. This year, it looks like greed won out and I have to pay more.
I would also like to see a free state e-file, particularly because CA requires state e-File if there if I federal e-file. One of the reasons I switched from H&R Block is to save money on tax preparation.
What's great about it: Carries over information from last year, imports some information
What's not so great: Had to buy higher edition for Sched C.

Saved a Bunch

I was encourage to use Turbo Tax by the fact that my experience with a tax business last year was a joke. My wife and I did all the work and he spent an hour or so inputting the data and charged by the sheet! Our return was huge and cost a lot. Major work is getting information together and we did that again same as last year. It took a while for me to input data as we had business, farm and royalty income. No problems to complete.
What's great about it: Very simple to input data and complete.
What's not so great: Questions were answered quickly and very helpful.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Some disappointment

I preferred to see the comparison to the prior year to make sure entries were similar this did not appear to be an option this year. I think that feature helps with errors.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: No comparisson to last year's return as in year's past. This helps to make sure all entries are complete
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
