Verified Purchase:Yes
I used the Sony camcorder mostly while deep sea fishing last Summer.
I have great action pictures of my fishing trips from when I left the harbor at 6;00 am, watching the sun peek over the horizon, fighting the many fish we caught, and the return trip at the end of the day. It gives me such detailed footage that I can share with friends and family. Thank you very much Sony for helping me make an excellent choice.
I would recommend this to a friend!

2:1 better than any Hero.

So much better in so many ways, even for professionals. I own a total of 12 GoPro Hero cameras from model 1 through 3 in all flavours so this opinion comes from a profesional with an extensive GoPro experience for all kinds of applications from leisure, industrial and POV/FPV.
This new model (AS100V) is so much better in so many ways! Where to start? (1) Build - this camera is solid. Sony is Sony and experience shows. Best of all and contrary to the competition, this one is splash proof while "naked". (2) Battery- the battery is truly a high quality battery with true high capacity. It is compact, light weight and shared with many Sony cameras. Expect true recording times of 2 hours with GPS, wi-fi, and everything on. (3) OIS - this is one of the camera's strongest advantage. (4) PRO recording - at 50 mbps all professionals will be very happy with a format and bit rate that truly matches their profesional cameras. (5) Wireless VIDEO Remote - need to say more? (6) Stereo microphone - better recording while in water-proof case and standard microphone input. (7) Cross section / profile - This is one camera that does look like a parachute. (8) ANAMORPHIC COMPOSITE VIDEO for FPV/POV - a lot will not relate to this one but this was the MAIN reason why I switched to Sony from Hero. After months of trying that Hero fixes their composite video output, I gave up after they told that they will not fix it and leave the output as it is. This affect people that use the composite video output for POV/FPV applications and hate the top/bottom black bars intended for 4:3 screens. Who uses those? Apparently Hero. I don't so I switched.
From now on, all cameras we purchase will be from Sony. this is an excellent product. If you purchased their previous models, give this one a shot. I hope they through the noise of the market leader and people try this one. It is truly better.
What needs to improve - My personal note to Sony: (a) Great but too simple video editing app and iOS. Please keep developing them and allow developers to create custom dashboards for the PC/Mac app. (b) Please Sony, make a Sony branded power/video out cable for FPV applications. I have been creating my own and I know the camera supports it. You will greatly expand your market if you market the same cable that you have sold in the past for other cameras. The current composite video cable does have a power-in connection. (c) Allow for 2.7K recoding.

Great cam but needs more mounting acc options

Bought the HDR-AS100 bundle with he live view and its been fantastic so far.
But there's a need for an additional tripod adapter when setting up multiple locations. Really surprised this adapter cannot be bought from Sony.
It would act similar to my tripod plate where once its set I can mount and dismount and not disturb filming angle.
Some portable mounting locations don't use big tripod plates and the small tripod adapter is perfect for such applications.
Please Sony make this accessory available to purchase.

Buyer beware, start stop button will not last!
on November 14, 2014

I bought this camera to replace my HDR-AS15, which still worked flawlessly after a year of hard use. I noticed on the first HDR-AS100v I had the start stop button was hard to push, and with the handy-cam attachment I had to push reasonable hard to get the camera to start or stop recording.
My first HDR-AS100 had a optical malfunction, and was replaced under warranty. The second one I received worked better than the first, and I noticed the button was a lot easier to push too. This lasted all of 3 months, then it became harder to push, and eventually this resulted in reducing my AKA-LU1 handy cam attachment to a 99 dollar paperweight.
The record button has a major design flaw in it, otherwise it would continue to function like it did from new. I am extremely distraught that my second HDR-AS100 is giving me so much trouble, and cost me my AKA-LU1 handycam attachment in the process. I think it is only a matter of time before I can't turn the camera back on. I have to push really hard at this point.
The video quality is stellar, but build quality? If the guts from this camera where in the housing from the HDR-AS15 it would have been the perfect camera. But instead they are in a splash proof housing that is unfortunately not designed for everyday use.
If you are going to use it every once and a while it's a great camera I am sure. But for daily use? Prepare to be as disappointed as I am. $299 dollars... 1 exchange (and hopefully another, I re-upped the protection plan from the place I bought it at). and a whole lot of headache...
If you click on the picture below it shows you the plastic arm that pushes the little button to turn recording on and off. This plastic arm is undoubtedly the culprit. In the HDR-AS15 this arm is straight, and seems to be cast out of a sturdier plastic.
Buyer beware! If you plan to use this daily, it will start to fight your index finger tooth and nail whenever you turn it on or off.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

go pro vs sony
on October 13, 2014
Posted by: chiller717
I have all the Go Pro's and just picked up the Sony. For what it is worth..i feel no need to give either brand a con...only pro's. Reason being..the technology is quite remarkable compared to just a few years ago. The color and low light recording on the sony is better and is also a bit easier to touch buttons with your gloves on in the trails but the go pro's are a bit easier to mount in fun and funky places on your bike, quad, car(reason? ..larger variety of mounts. Sony has image stabelization..AWESOME! Do yourself a favor.....get one of each...i use them both and love each brand
I would recommend this to a friend!

A few bad points
on June 12, 2014
Posted by: Skydiver
THE GOOD:
The camera works well, both above and under water, good picture and colors.
THE BAD:
No lens cap included with camera, they want $24.99 for a lens cap.
The time lap photography makes a very loud clicking sound for each picture taken, so loud that I can hear it from a room away, have to wonder about this, tried turning off the beeps in the hope that the clicking would stop too but no luck. So much for unobtrusive animal time laps.
There does not seem to be any way to combine all the time laps photos into a movie, you get only hundreds of single JPEGs and no way to combine them to play out as the software is really lacking and there is no way to ask a question or search for an answer.
The software that it uses is almost useless as the online instructions are very lacking with no instructions of any depth.
