Let me start by saying that I was a proud owner of a Hero GOPRO 2, but I have to say that its limitations, and that of its successor, the GOPRO 3, made me look seriously at the SONY POV. This is a wonderful device. It IS small, and unlike the GOPRO, it fits well in the palm of your hand. The video is markedly better. The sound is markedly better. The WIFI is great. I love that it transfers the images to my iPhone - and easily to my iMac as well. Drawbacks? Sure. I would love a zoom feature, but in the balance of things is that really crucial? I carried this and took movies of my daughters graduation from high school, mounted it on my car for a ride up the coastal highway, and remotely turned it on to capture a sunrise off my balcony the other morning. What more do you want?

Happy to own this

Tested it out last week in Tawas, MI. Took it fishing on Lake Huron. Weather was cold and winds made the water choppy. It held up just fine and took awesome videos and pictures.
I haven't used the time lapse yet and read it wasn't as good as the GoPros. However the positives of AS100 far outweighs the GoPro Hero 3+ black edition (i owned one and returned it due to firmware update issues). I love the AS100 Action cam's remote view via wrist device or smart phone. I also love the stabilization. It truly enhances the video quality. The only thing I'm concerned about is the battery life. It seems to go quick so I purchased a back up battery.
Thank you Sony for making a great product. I am telling everybody about this great product. Keep up the good work! Tomorrow we start our world tour - Niagara Falls, Toronto to catch a train to Vancouver (hope to catch epic footage of the Rockies), San Francisco, Chicago, Tampa, LA, Philippines, Burma, Atlanta and finally Dubai. I may update later on w my Youtube link.

Very Impressed!!

First of all, this IS NOT my first action camera. I have been using them for a few years now and to be honest, this little Sony is the best for my money.
I really did not expect the camera to perform as great as it did when I put it through a series of test rides on my Cannondale road bike while using different video settings after viewing some video and pictures.
I conducted many hours of research before selling one of my former cameras and purchasing this Sony. From the research I had learned that the external mic input could not be accessed if the camera was in its cradle and this at first had disappointed me, but after hearing the audio from my test rides I see that the external mic is not necessary with this little jewel (for my needs). I used to get terrible wind noise, which is why I used an external mic on other action cams. This Sony does have some wind noise but very little in my opinion but what it does have is great audio!
The video: well, lets just say I did a double take when it came across my screen. The scenery colors were like being there. The controls are very easy to learn and I like that it provides options for many different settings, especially the video, GPS and Wifi. Speaking of GPS: when you couple the results of your video GPS footage with the Sony Play Memories Home software then you are in for a treat! With just a push of a couple of buttons you are able to view (and output) different views on the same screen that also shows your speed, mileage and other stats of your venture, even a map. Great user friendly software. I am still conducting tests on the unit but as far as I am concerned, this one is the top dog in this fight of action cams.

Great Purchase

I have had this camera for a few months now. I have taken it on vacation to the Bahamas, which I used it every day. The video quality is amazing. The only thing I don't like is you need a accessory to add it to a universal tripod mount, all tripod accessories come with the camera. The water proof case housing is easy to use and handle under water. This is great little camera to have when you want to travel light. The image stabilization is my favorite feature, especially when I was on a speed boat hand holding it at 60 mph. I would recommend buying 32g or higher memory card and one extra battery. I did and I was always ready to either take pictures or video while on vacation.
I would recommend this to a friend!

HDR-AS100 - Sony keeps upgrading
on October 5, 2014

I own a sony HDR-AS15, AS30 & the AS100. These are all great little cams. I was not planning on an additional camera, so soon, but when Sony released the HDR-AS100 that does not require the outer case for light water (Splashproof), that was the upgrade I had been waiting for. The waterproof cases that came with the AS30 & AS100 were an improvement in less bulk than the case that came with the 15 but they still added extra bulk to a small profile design. With the AS100 I don't fear getting caught out in the rain, or being splashed with a water gun from a kid, regardless of if the camera is out, on, and recording - or in my pocket for storage. My other remaining complaint is that Sony needs to design the case so that an extra part is not required to mount to a standard camera mount. I want that built into the case. Some call it a gimmick, some say it is the industry standard of tomorrow. 4k recording would have generated 5 stars.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Cam So Far!
on August 27, 2014

Did about 5 hours of research looking at reviews and videos since I've never owned a cam like this. So keep in mind that I don't have any experience with any other action cams. The video quality could be said is arguably neck and neck with GoPro depending on what you use it for, but sound quality is way better on Sony. So far I'm VERY satisfied with it's performance! Like all other cameras it has it's ups and downs.
-I have more of a preference to mounting the camera at my forehead like the GoPro, but the design of the Sony 100 only allows for it go on the side of your head. Unless you wear a helmet. Then it can mount on top. Just my pref.
-Anti-fogging sheet instructions say to place them on the side of the cam, but they fit WAY better under the cam.
-Bought Sony's flotation device, but returned it because it's not firmly secure on it. It doesn't really latch onto anything on the cam. It just tightens. So with a lot of movement I can see this thing sliding off. A bit disappointed since I really liked the look of it, but will just opt for a floating wrist attachment.
-Look at reviews comparing the sound quality when the cams are in their cases. The 100 is a LOT better!! Not so muffled. Same goes for shots in low light levels. Sony's better.
-The image-stabilization makes a HUGE difference between the 100 and GoPro. Way less shaking and you don't get that dizzy sensation when enjoying your vids later. You end up having to film with a smaller angle so the cam can compensate for all the shaking, but the angle is still wide enough. Didn't really notice the angle difference until I compared with and without the image-stabilization.
-Playmemories app is awesome because you're not forced to buy the wrist screen in order to set up your shots and view as it's recording! You can also make changes to certain cam settings without having hit the buttons on the cam.
...HOWEVER, ther IS one thing about the app or cam that actually urks me a bit. I periodically go to a cabin in Death Valley with some friends. A great thing about that place is you get no cell reception. I still use my phone to map our track, listen to music, etc, but no signal means it's constantly looking for a signal and uses up my phone battery. So I put it in airplane mode, but turn on other functions like GPS and Bluetooth. Even though the app connects to the cam via WiFi, it won't let it connect if the phone is in airplane mode. I have WiFi on, but the app says I need to turn off airplane mode in order for it to connect.
This is actually what prompted me to write this review. Maybe someone from Sony will pass this on up to the right people and update the app to fix this? Maybe? Maybe before my next trip in 3 weeks?? =) Maybe there's already a way to make it work in airplane mode and I just haven't figured it out yet. Help?
Don't get me wrong, though. Overall I really LOVE my action cam!!! Look up the vid reviews and judge for yourself.

small and very handy with waterproof case the audio recording way better than the gopro
I bought this camera because I always liked Sony, I thought the color reproduction was better than the GoPro and it looked better mounted on a motorcycle helmet than the GoPro.
I specifically bought this to record my brother and my motorcycle trip to Europe. Unfortunately, when I used it, it kept shutting itself off after 15-20 minutes (sometimes sooner). The battery was fully charged and I had plenty of memory. I wouldn't find out it was off until I got off the bike and checked it. To make matters worse, EVERY TIME it shut itself off, it failed to finish writing the video to the flash drive and it was therefore corrupted. I could not check the recordings until I got home. When I got back to the States and tried to watch our videos, almost EVERY VIDEO WAS CORRUPTED!!! I changed flash drive every day as a safety precaution and all but 1 was corrupted. NO VIDEO!!! My brother and I are in our 60's and this was a bucket list trip. We will never be able to do it again. When I called Sony about the problem, they kept telling me over and over and over that I should re-format my flash drives and they should work. How does that bring back my lost video? The problem wasn't with the flash drives because I tested EACH ONE before I left for the trip.
Since i bought the camera a few months before my trip, my 30-day warrantee had expired. They told me that for $90 they would take a look at it. Big deal!!! I doubt seriously that they would have fixed it, so I decided NOT to throw more money into.
It sat in my drawer for 6 months. We planned to go snorkeling on a vacation in December and I thought, what the heck - I'll give it another try. I wanted some under water video. It is supposed to be good for something like 6-9 feet under water. That's a joke, also. I held the camera just under the surface to video some fish. It stopped after about 30 seconds. I opened it up and it was soaked inside. This is not waterproof at all. This camera is still not even a year old and I cannot afford to risk losing any more vacation videos. Soon as I can get the money together, I'm going to buy a different camera. Any model would be better.
If I sound disgruntled, it's because I am. The camera is junk, their service is just as bad.
DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA!!! BUY ANYTHING ELSE!!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
