Driver update needed
on August 3, 2019
Posted by: DanR

My Apple system keeps telling me that the Epson software driver is out of date, needs an update. I just went to the Epson website and downloaded the latest driver/utilities for my Epson V800 Photo scanner but it appears that update still does not meet the Apple requirements. Unfortunate!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello DanR, unfortunately the pop-up from Apple is confusing. Apple plans to update a future version of their operating system to no longer support 32-bit applications. Mac OS 10.14 currently does support 32-bit applications, like the drivers for your V800, so you can download and run your software normally. When Apple releases their new OS in future, you should be able to find updates to your Epson software at our Support site. If you need further assistance, our Epson Support Team would be happy to help and can be reached at (562) 276-4382; Hours: Monday – Friday, 6am – 8pm PT; Saturday, 7am – 4pm PT. Regards, Leo – The Epson Team.

Good for what it does.

Bought this solely for slides/negatives. I have an Epson GT-15000 for everything else. I don't use Silverfast; always gone via Epson Scan Professional Mode and used Photoshop for whatever's needed.
One anomaly is cleaning the glass plate, which results in streaks during the preview mode and only in black and white. I'd have to shut off and wait a few hours to get it back to normal. Very strange

Software Incompatible with Mac
on November 14, 2019

Sadly, after going to the expense of buying this, I discover that its software is not compatible with my Mac Catalina system. So, I had to purchase a third-party (more complicated ) software Silverfast, which was recommended by the manufacturer.

Easy to use, not so easy to figure out

I have had my V800 photo scanner for about 3 weeks. Set up was easy, but the user manual is sorely deficient. I have had to call customer service several times to get answers to questions. It’s hard to find the help number, but it is worth the effort as the customer service reps are both very helpful and very knowledgeable.
The quality of the scan and ease of use are great. I am still trying to determine what size file I prefer for archiving, which is a personal choice. As well as which source I prefer, actual photos or the color negatives.

I bought this scanner because I wanted a high quality scanner to archive a few thousand family photos. It does exactly what I need it to do and is easy to use.

Not many options today for a scanner that will do slides, 35mm and 6x6 film and pictures. Fortunately this scanner will do all of that. The pluses - it will deliver great results, especially with slides. The Epson Scan software is easy to use (I was scanning in 15-minutes after it was up and running) To be fair, I did have to download the latest version updates, but once that was done everything connected and worked as planned. And the results a beautiful.
The minuses - the dust removal settings struggle a bit and if you set them to "high" the occasionally odd things will happen (I had a few pupils register as dust so it tried to "correct" that, as well as an entire row of port holes on a ship all got masked and "fixed". Honestly the best thing to do with dust is to clean the slides before then get scanned as best you can. Another thing is the optional Silverfast software - the learning curve was much steeper than the Epson Scan and considering the results I was getting I just gave up on it for now.
So bottom line, very happy with the way it works and the images are fantastic. BTW, I ended up choosing the V800 over the V850, but if you are going to do a ton of work then having the extra slide and film holders will help make the process more efficient - because scanning takes a while at high settings and it helps to be be able to clean and load the next holder while waiting.
I can't speak to the image quality of the 850, but I find it hard to imagine it could be that much better.
