Best Prosumer Scanner Made

I've had a V-700 for 6 or 7 years and it was a great scanner until a recent problem. The V-800 is the same scanner with an LED lamp which eliminates the warm up time between scans. Although upgraded software is included, I never use it, the Epson software does the job. Not necessary for the casual scan, but if you do any graphic work, it's worth the price. Thank you Epson!! The V-800 Scanner with the SC P-800 printer makes a pro out of this consumer.

Excellent scanner for prints, negatives and slides

I purchased the V800 to replace an older Epson scanner. Since I scan a lot of negatives and especially slides, I was a little unsure how this flatbed scanner would work compared to dedicated slide/film scanners. Since those are harder to find (at the least the best ones) and are pretty pricey, I thought I would give the V800 a try. I have not been disappointed. It is fast and produces extremely good results for slides (scanned at 4800 dpi with Digital Ice for dust removal).
The included SilverFast software is very unintuitive and difficult to learn, but can produce great results if you have the patience. The Epson scanning software is pretty rudimentary but I edit every scan with Photoshop or ACDsee so that's not an issue.

I bought the V800 for the high optical density range it can handle as occurs with old b&w negatives. These old negatives also come in various large formats so that the limited scan width for negatives available on the V600 is not sufficient. The V800 has proved capable of handling these old negatives with distinction.
In addition it does very well in recovering color in old faded color negatives.
I further value the SilverFast scan application that comes bundled with the V800. It's dust removal capability proved important on these old negatives. The only drawback I have found with the SilverFast application is that I can't find that it will control the focal plane choice for negative scans. For this control it is necessary to use the less sophisticated, but native Epson scan control application which was also supplied with the V800.

Fantastic scanner

The Epson Perfection V800 Photo Color Scanner is even better than I expected. Unless you are a professional photographer tweaking every aspect of your images, this scanner will exceed your needs and your expectations. It is fast and easy to use, and the automatic scanning functions produced better images than some professional scanning software I tried as a comparison.

Outstanding results, once you purchase film holders for V700

I will make this short. This is an outstanding machine that creates superb images in very short amounts of time. Film holders supplied with unit are terrible. Glass/plastic inserts intended to flatten film negatives are dust traps. Once I purchased holders for V700 scanner, all was well. Another option to overcome the poorly designed film holders is to scan directly on scanner bed, which is, mercifully, possible on this excellent machine.

Mostly good but some issues
on April 9, 2018

My 700 died right in the middle of a project so I needed to replace it fast. I liked the 700 so I bought the 800 — it's mostly good.
Sadly, it has the exact same capabilities of the 700 with the exception of some lenses that help when scanning slides or negatives.
In the 700, the filament had to warm up if you left the scanner sitting too long and that was a small pain as you waited for "the scanner is warming up." Now, with LEDs, there is no waiting and I really enjoy that. However, the scanner does turn off and that's a bit of a pain but the software that comes with the scanner does let you increase the time before the scanner turns off. The software is kind of sketchy but it works and does the job.
One big disappointment is that the claimed 4800 and 6400 dpi is a lot of whooeee. Nothing near that level of resolution. Without doing invented pixels, look for about 800 on photos and about 1800 on slides/negatives
Another issue are the holders for negatives. They've done two things good and one thing bad on these: The good: They've increased the thickness of the plastic so they are sturdier and they've given them some "feet" that lets you vary the height of the unit so if you need to raise or lower the item to the platen, you can.
The bad is that they now have some "mostly" transparent plastic that the slide is pushed against to maintain a good flatness of the negative. Normally I'd cheer this but the quality of the plastic is not very good and there is a bit of cloudiness to the transparency. I read one review that they discovered some chromic aberration because of this but I did not. Due to the poor quality of this plastic, it would be very easy to scratch this. Over time I expect the cloudiness to increase. The choice to use such cheap plastic is a big big shame and limits the potential use and lifespan of these film holders.
The slide holders do not have this plastic and remain very good.
The Epson Scan software that comes with any Epson scanner is serviceable but I noticed pronounced distortion during the scan making rectangles look a bit like parallelograms. Fortunately this comes with SilverFast and that is good software. I maintain my use of Silverfast AI software and use that which is the best scanning software around albeit with some issues with the UI.
To be honest, I'm not sure I'd have purchased this if I'd known how far off the official resolution was compared to the real resolution and the issues with the negative holders are very damaging. However, I've used Epson for some 20 years and I'm not sure what the alternatives are at this point. I would recommend that people do some searching before purchasing.

Fantastic product. I'm using it for scanning customers negatives for archiving. Works great, you just have to fight the dust, but that is with everything now a days.
Fast and clear scans. I have been using Epson scanners and printers for years and have always been very happy with there products.
If you have to choose, choose EPSON.

I have had the Epson Perfection V800 for a couple of months now and have had a chance to use it numerous times. It works perfectly. I have used it for scanning slides, b&w negatives, color negatives, as well as b&w and color prints. The results have been outstanding and the software provided in relatively simple to use and very powerful.
