Disapointed with the V800

My V470 finally needed replacement - so I got the V800. The scans are much more difficult than the V70 was. The film trays are awkward to handle, and with 35mm strips it is very difficult to get a sharp image. The focusing nibs on the sides of the film trays do not give a sharp image when the default position (the arrows) is used. I have adjusted them to the other settings without success. I had better scans with my V470.

It's beautiful when it works.

I used the Epson Perfection V800 like a workhorse, mostly on 35mm color transparencies, almost every day for a couple of weeks with the SilverFast software. When it worked it was beautiful. I particularly like the infrared scratch reduction (iSRD). During each session, however, the scanner would crash (lose connection) several times just after completing the iSRD pass. I updated all the software, both Epson and SilverFast. It crashed less, but still crashed. After a couple of weeks the scanner stopped producing beautiful scans. The images became a series of fine vertical streaks of colors from the image being scanned. Both the Epson and SlverFast software produced the same result. The scanner had failed and had to be exchanged per the warranty. The second scanner is working well, but occasionally produces a vertical lavender line on the left side of the glass platten for the full length of the entire 35mm slide frame holder, thus marking 4 of the 12 slides. I updated the software again, and so far no line. So, yes, I love the scanner when it works. I just hope it continues to do so.

Perfect for my needs

I dropped my rating by one star just for the following reasons.
1. The 35mm film holder seems flimsy and I wonder how long it will last
2. The clips to secure the film holder rails easily become un-clipped with noticing resulting in less than perfect scans.
3. During scanning there are often long periods of "Scanner not responding" during a scan but given time things return to normal.
4. The Epson scan software is a bit basic.
5. Even though the included Silverfast scanning software is free and offers more features, I feel this is a poor product and has great difficulty recognizing the negative areas in the 35m film holder, every image needs to be manually adjusted.
6. Using the ICE dust and scratch removal system results in scans that are way to long, increasing scan times by almost 400%
Otherwise a superb scanner for the price

These frames, especially the 4x5 are nothing but cheap "s".! Rework the film holders and charge another $50.

So far it has done a wonderful job on prints and printed material, but negatives end up with different parts of the negative appearing, but no complete negative except 4x5.

Efficient photo scanner

This scanner was easy to get up and running in a Windows 10 environment. The scan sequence is relatively fast compared to my office HP scanner.
The bundled SilverFast software did not run however.
Does not work like a dedicated document scanner out of the box. That will require additional software.
I would recommend this to a friend!
