Best since my HP 4c

I own MANY slides and negatives that for DECADES I have struggled to scan. Starting at the dawn of computer photo imagery, I bought HP's 4c, then 4p, then photosmart. Those scanners survived and out performed all of the off the shelf usb scanners that followed for years, but I never was able to get the really good scans I was chasing.
Finally, this Epson Perfection V800 has the settings that make home slide and negative scanning just barely affordable. The height adjusting holder trays allow a fine focus of the negative that wasn't there before, the dual lenses make it possible to have both transparency and flatbed scans. And the IR Dust removal is nothing short of magical. I'm using this with the SilverFast 8 software, and FINALLY scanning is manageable without hours of tweaking. I recommend the Nick Carver videos for further information.

Epson Perfect V800 Review.

I bought this two weeks ago and am about . I’m new to scanning but read the book by Steinhoff as well as Segal prior to starting. I’m about 3000 scans in at this point on color negatives. I’m using an Epson V800 and scanning using Silverfast Ai Archive. I stanning to HDRi archive at this point. On some days encounter frequent freezes in the middle of batch scanning. It’s unclear if this is an Epson issue or Silverfast. It requires me to exit Silverfast, shut down the scanner, and restart everything.
Hope you and your staff are safe. I'm not sure the plastic on the film holder is useful as it requires close attention to remove the dust. Overall I like the product so far but wish the freezes would not occur. I also plan to buy a second film holder.

Excellent scans froml slides and negatives

I had been using an old Perfection 2450 to scan slides and negatives for creating photos to sell on Ebay. I was never happy with the scanned images which lacked the sharp definition of the original slides and negatives. The V800 has overcome this shortcoming by providing much sharper TIFF and JPG images over the 2450. The ICE software can be helpful for eliminating dust and scratches but scanned images must be closely inspected because the software can create hard edges in bright covered images.

We have been cleaning out my mothers home where she lived for over 50 years. She had boxes and boxes of photos & negatives. I worked with the scanner on my Epson 600 printer until April when this V800 was bought. It has been awesome especially with the negatives I am now working on. These photos were from 1880 till 1990. We now have well over 5000 digitalized because of this great scanner.

Overall, the V800 is a great scanner that fits my needs but the film trays/holders on my older Epson scanner were much easier to work with and didn't attract dust like a magnet the way these do. The poor design of the film holders takes away from the overall experience and I find myself having to re-scan my negatives because of the presence of fine dust particles caught in the film tray.

No 35mm full roll/bulk roll capability

Overall, I love the scanner. It has great quality, and is able to do high DPI scans of my negatives.
My only real issue is that it requires you to cut down the negatives in order to scan them. Most 1 hour photo stores cut the negatives down to 4 frames and then sleeve them, after processing.
The tray that is used for the Perfection V800 can hold 3 negatives of 6 frames each which is all fine and well, IF you have pre-cut negatives. But I ran my own photography company for nearly 15 years, and NEVER let my negatives be cut down after being processed.
I am currently in the middle of archiving all of my digital images, and would also like to scan and digitally archive my 35mm negatives (about 400 rolls -- both 24 and 36 exposure rolls) but do not want to have to cut them down in order to do so.
Also, the tray really cannot be modified, as it aligns the negatives from front to back, rather than from side to side, which might allow a full roll of 35mm 24 frames, 36frames, or bulk to be slid through the tray 6 frames at a time.

I am more that pleased with this scanner. I am scanning old neatuves and slides that are many sizes .. Some of the older odd size slides and negatives I was able to made fit in slide trays or trim them. Yes I am an amateur an only want my photos for Sentimental Reasons and a few photographs for an album I am more than pleased with the results they are very good quality after touch up with my photo software easy to use. It would of cost me much more than the cost of the scanner to developer all my negatives . Some negatives that I scanned I had no idea if I even knew who the person or place was and was happy I did not wast a lab fee to develope some of them.. I would definitely recommend it ...

This is an wonderful improvement over the Epson 4870 Photo scanner which I used before. It is not a drum scanner but I am not printing billboard size work. It scans beautifully, albeit noisily.
I LOVE that I can scan film without a film carrier. Because of that I can select which frames and where on the glass I position them and can scan several images on different strips at a time.
Excellent software interface. No hitches, no glitches.
Yay!
