Relative to the previous rating of the V800 two weeks ago, the scanner performed admirably after restarting my iMac...of course! Greater detail, faster scanning, save where I wanted the file to go. A vast improvement over my 12 year old Epson 4180 that is still serviceable.

I bought this several months ago to for scanning in old photos for use in a book. It is easy to use and provides great quality scans even on photos that are not in good shape. I will be using it to also archive old family slides, etc. but haven't done that yet. Set-up was easy right out of the box.

Good scanner

The V800 arrived VERY WELL packed. It took a little effort to lift it out of the shipping box. Hook up was simple. I had to obtain a DVD player to use the installation disc-my computer did not have a DVD player. It took a short time to sort through the software usage. But, once reviewed, was not complicated. The scanner (itself) works as described and makes very good scans of documents and (importantly for me) 35mm. slides. The only "nit" I have to pick is that no USB cable is included. The cable is a type "A" to "B" connector style. I had to purchase one separately.

I purchased this to scan vintage black and white negatives; film and glass. The negatives are of every size. The scanner produces scans of exceptionally high quality. It has taken me a little bit of time to learn it's quirks - but that may be more a reflection of user than device. In any event, I am quite pleased and very glad that I purchased the Epson 800.

Nice Scanner, Fiddly Trays.

I'm giving this scanner four stars because the quality of my black and white scans is pretty good. It's straightforward and easy to use. The one thing I don't like are the film trays. For one thing I wish it came with two trays for medium format 6 x 6 so I could have one tray ready to go while the first tray was in the scanner. I can't even find another Epson tray for purchase online. Secondly the trays and the ANR glass (plastic) seems to attract a lot of dust and I have to constantly make sure they're clean each and every time I put them into the scanner. Overall the quality of the images coming out of the scanner is very good and I'm happy with that. It was easy to set up and the Epson Scan software so far has presented no problems.

Negative scanning is amazing

I recently obtained a job which required scanning several thousand 4x5 B&W negatives, a few color. The holders are excellent, but I've been just laying on the scanner using "area". Some negs are curled, but the lenses correct. I'm able to scan 4 at a time. PLUS...I can use levels in each individual selection. Saves me a lot of time.
The only criticism I have is that the connection is USB2. Using a USB3 cable would transfer to computer much faster.
I highly recommend the V800 to anyone serious about scanning.

I purchased this to replace my Epson 4870 scanner, as I have negatives and transparencies in a variety of formats up through 4x5. At first I thought the anti-Newton supports in the negative holders were terrific, but after the purchase I discovered that they are plastic rather than glass. This make keeping them clean and dust free, and static-free, next to impossible.
The SilverFast software is a great addition to EpsonScan for me, although it does take some care to become efficient when scanning multiple images.
