4 years or more and still doing it's job!

I bought this for the sole reason of printing being able to print the extra large labels, that's what it does. It's not an overly complicated piece of equipment, and the software is pretty simple in my honest opinion. There has been times where the software failed to load etc, but the modern version seems to be fine.

Runs like a top!

We purchased the LabelWriter 4XL about a year ago because we signed up to ship things ourselves, rather than always running to the PO and standing in line. We've used the LabelWriter 400 Turbo for many years, and only had one minor issue. So, based on our great experiences with that machine, we bought this one. No problems getting it up and running, and it has operated perfectly ever since!

A Complete Dumpster Fire

Before I continue, I just want to mention that I have actually paid for, tried, and failed to use this product as intended because the product is faulty and built with a proprietary label system in mind. The one star rating is NOT arbitrary - it is meant to reduce the overall score as much as possible, because NOBODY should be buying this product.
First of all, as other reviewers have noted, Windows will NOT recognize this device when simply plugged in - uPnP doesn't seem to be supported with this device, and the only hope you ever have of using it is to install the software first, which you then immediately need to update because the fine folks at Dymo are too lazy to just make an updated installer.
Secondly, once you have connected the printer to the system after already having installed and reinstalled the software, you are going to find out very quickly that you CANNOT actually use regular labels in this product, because Dymo has designed it in such a way to only accept labels that they, themselves, are more than happy to sell to you at an exorbitant rate.
Third, the machine feeds about 5-10 labels at a time if you DO try to use normal labels, wasting your supply and costing you money before you've ever printed a thing.
And lastly, my printer couldn't even handle a simple Windows test page.
Dymo, if you're readying this, I'm not angry and I don't need you to respond telling me how bad you feel that I had a bad experience. In fact, don't do that for ANY other review going forward. What you NEED to do is get back to the drawing board and make a printer that is SUPERIOR to your competitors, so that people will WANT to buy it. Trying to force people to use your proprietary system and making an inferior product will result in more reviews like this, which will result in people not buying your products.
Take ownership of this widespread problem, and fix it.

Hello.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by our product. Kindly navigate to our website to install the latest version of our software so that you do not have to update it. You may try third-party labels but we do not guarantee that they will work well with our printer.
If the printer is feeding excessively, we recommend cleaning your printer to solve the excessive feed issue. Please use a cleaning card supplied in the original box or a business card moistened with an alcohol solution such as ethanol, isopropyl, acetone, or hand sanitizer. Remove the front face cover, take the cleaning card (or business card), and feed it through the print roller 5-10 times making sure to cover all parts of the printer.
Once it has been done, please clean the sensors of the printer. Locate the sensor board below the black lever and clean them thoroughly using a dry cotton bud.
If you are still having issues (If you have more questions or feedback), please reach out to us via our website or through LiveChat. We’re available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 5pm Eastern Time.
Thank you! DYMO® Consumer Care.

This product is garbage.

I've wasted an entire roll of the Dymo labels made for this machine on trying to print one label. Prints are always off. Huge waste of money and energy, and reflects poorly on our business.

Good hardware, HORRENDOUS software.

We’ve printed thousands of labels with 2 of these units for the past 10 years I think. The hardware is great, and I don’t mind using only Dymo labels. BUT… the latest software package is HORRENDOUS. Completely illogical setup and workflow, and can’t save label templates in a logical fashion. Merging with address lists has become a massive headache. The previous versions of the software were fine. The 1 star is for the software ONLY. It cripples an otherwise fine printer. Fire your software developers please.

Worst Piece of Equipment I Have Ever Owned! Period
on September 21, 2022

As someone who is rather tech savvy I wasn't too worried when my Dymo 4XL started having issues right out of the gate but after years of using this product I can honestly say it is the worst, most frustrating, time wasting, bad label spewing piece of hardware I have ever had the displeasure of owning.
Half the time it works ok, the other half of the time it:
- Spews countless blank labels (YES EVEN THE DYMO BRAND) - Gets jammed up in the most ridiculous ways requiring complete disassembly and cleaning - Shows "printer is offline" when it absolutely is not (and no its not some installation issue or problem with my USB cable, hub etc) - Prints crooked labels - Gets stuck half way through printing a label
and the list goes on...
If I had a dollar for every minute of time and frustration I have spent with this absolute joke I would be on a tropical island drinking Pina Coladas right now.

Hi Andre,
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing bad time with our printer. We always expect to give our best into products but we failed in your case. Label jams and excessive feeding usually happens with 3rd party labels. Excessive feeding of DYMO labels happens with dirty sensors, cleaning the print sensors once in a month should resolve this issue. If any issue is persisting, you could reach out to us to get issue resolved quickly and efficiently. However, your valuable feedback is important for us to improve ourselves.
If you are still having issues, please reach out to us via our website or through LiveChat. We’re available Mon.-Fri. 9am - 5pm Eastern Time.
