Great camera!!

I've been looking to get into photography for a while now. I was looking at a full frame type of camera, but a friend got a NX500 and loved it. After some research, I felt it had all the features I was looking for in an entry level camera and has room to grow as my skill does.
I love the for and the size of it. I don't mind that they is no viewfinder, as the screen is very nice. I'm loving getting in to all of the features and learning how to take great pictures. And the 4k videos look AMAZING!!!
Pros: Inexpensive, Lightweight
I would recommend this to a friend!

Expectations are a let down

The NX500 was to be a very hopeful contender against many other products, but falls short. I picked up the Korean version of this camera as it was released before the U.S. version and I have about 15 years experience with cameras. As of now the camera has some issues that can hopefully be worked out before the U.S. release. First off there are buffer issues. The camera buffer seems to fill up extremely fast compared to the nx1 even though it has the same DRIMe V processor. That leads me to the next issue of the 4K crop. Again this camera has the same processor as the NX1 so theoretically should be able to record 4K with out a crop. On the NX1 it records 7K raw footage which is then scaled down to 4K, whereas the NX500 crops in to do a 1:1 ratio, but this gives a severe crop. For example, a 16mm Samsung lens will be cropped to a 38.4mm lens on a full frame equivalent when shooting 4K. As mentioned before to solve this problem Samsung could just re sample the 7K image to a 4K image, but have for some reason opted not too even though the two cameras share the same image processor. The issue with this crop is that for one it was never mentioned in the original specs of the camera and was only changed on the website after the release of the camera in Korea, in addition to the numerous complaints. To me this is a bit backhanded as many were expecting a 4K experience similar to the nx1 without the headphone jack and perhaps the extra cinema profiles, but instead Samsung changed it completely. Additionally, peaking would not work when ever I tried to record video in 4K which leads me to believe that there is an issue with the processor. If this was the same processor in the NX1 then why are there all of these limitations. Regarding the 4K issue; the crop would not be as bad if there were lens that could accommodate for it. but as for now there are not. The only lens close to giving us a 24 mm equivalent when recording 4K is Samsung's 10mm fish eye lens. Though the issues with this lens are both the distortion that comes with a fish eye and the lack of ois or Samsung's version of optical image stabilization. To me these issues are deal breakers as they are for many others. If Samsung does not fix these issues through say a firmware update then I will tell people not to buy this camera as it isn't worth the cost.
Issues:
1) Buffer issues
2) 4K crop (same processor on the NX1, but why is there a crop on the NX500 with the same processor and sensor. At this point Samsung's gone too far in crippling their camera.)
3) No peaking available when recording 4K
4) There are no wide angle lens with OIS to accommodate for the NX500's 4K crop
Once these issues are fixed I will update this review, but as of now I am waiting.
Pros: Lightweight, 28mp sensor, compact size
Cons: Did not meet expectations, 4k crop, no peaking when recording 4k, buffer issues, does not come with lightroom, no wide angle lenses with ois, no where near prosumer level, plastic feeling, needs a silver lens like the nx mini, tripod base seems to be very weak
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

great features, but impossible to read the 4k files at the moment

I recently purchased the nx500 after reading all the reviews about it extensively.
the camera performs brilliantly as a still's camera.
for 4k filming, samsung offers a 10mm fisheye lense to counter the 1.7* crop (you just need to undistort it in post).
I have alot of issues focusing properly in video mode. Theres no magnify mode for checking your focus.
the camera->phone app cannot record 4k ( i cant even use my phone as a record button)
it simply does not have the option on the app to record in 4k.
but the biggest problem: Unlike all the reviews on the net. Samsung does not offer a converter from h265 to h264 with the actual sold product.
you cannot watch or use any footage taken in 4k (on pc) unless you purchase a converter!
also there is no dmg converter provided for reading the raw photos.
all of these are simply software related, but they're some pretty glaring gaps, and samsung is in the software business.
Pros: Bright display, Inexpensive, Lightweight
Cons: Did not meet expectations, no h265 converter, cannot remote record 4k
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Amazing camera, but...
on June 18, 2015

This camera takes amazing photos and videos. Definitely lives up to the hype. However, the one feature, and reason why I bought this camera, was the ability to transfer files (photos and videos) from the camera to my phone. This particular model only transfers photos unlike the nx300/3000 that can do both. Unless, I'm missing something......?
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Realistic color, Lightweight
Cons: can't transfer videos to phone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Unable to see much difference of pictures on screen compared to other cameras but after downloading i-launcher to desktop windows 7 computer and downloading video to computer and playing the video, the video slows, speeds, jumps. Not what I hoped for.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Did not meet expectations

Great in every way

Love the superfast autofocus, improved high ISO performance, increased level of customization (with ISO, shutter speed, etc.), and excellent dynamic range. I didn't know how much improvement there would be over the NX300, which I really enjoyed, but the upgrade was well worth it. Excellent build quality. Great bang for the buck.
Pros: Realistic color, Bright display, Durable
I would recommend this to a friend!
