Excellent, but...

I really like the Galaxy Player 5, but it has some deficiencies. First, a simple manual explaining the design and key functions/apps would go a long way toward making this device truly powerful. The manual basically show a picture of the device with labels for the buttons - lame. Second, there seems to be no O/S upgrade path. Samsung should simply tell us what upgrades, if any there will be. Not answering customer questions about this on the webpage leaves customers feeling abandoned and frankly, used. Some apps don't seem to work correctly or even logically. Tell me, why would a GPS app require wifi connection? If I was connected to wifi, I wouldn't want an app to tell me what turn to take next, right? Oh, and if I can't use the app without a data connection why pretend you're giving me something good, when really, it's useless? Frankly, a little information and common sense would leave me less frustrated. I shouldn't have to comb the internet for info that should have been in a manual.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Durable, pretty fast
Cons: poor documentation, useless apps, gps drains power, poorly designed power system
I would recommend this to a friend!

I was so pleased with the 1st one I bought, that I returned to the store a week later and purchased 2 more for my family! Size, performance and portability is just right and so far it just works!
Although it's priced higher that other media player in it's class, it out performs the others bar none. The single core processor does the job whether I'm web browsing, streaming a music video or movie or playing game from the Android market.
Great job Samsung!!!
Pros: Built-in speakers, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight
Cons: accessories limited

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 Feature Rich!

I am a professional electronics engineer that is involved in the customer service field. I needed a product that could replace my 7 year old digital PDA. The Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 offer an excellent array of features that make it very easy to migrate from the older PDA to the newer Android platform. I am overly impressed with the quality of features (both hardware and software) that come packaged with the Galaxy Player. The Pro-features can be read on any review, and I give a full 5.0 (top rating) to these features.
The Cons:
1. The Galaxy Player suffers from the slightest misalignment of the touch screen to the viewing display. So functions like typing on the keyboard, or pressing tiny command buttons in your applications are not accurate. I have googled this issue, and there are several complaints about it (but it is not a show stopper). I do highly recommend that the next flash upgrade for the Galaxy Player includes a 'Touch Screen Calibration' feature to correct for this issue. For now I just use the device's keyboard in landscape mode.
2. The built in FM Radio only works with headphones, even though it has a setting to play through external speakers. This should also be fixed. Others have brought this up as an issue as well, but again, it is not a reason to stop a person from investing in this quality-packed device.
Congratulations to Samsung, for devoting product development resources to create this device.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive
Cons: touch screen not aligned to display, fm radio does not play through external speakers

Samsung Galaxy Player Rocks!!

We own an iPod Touch 4g, and my wife & I both prefer our Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 over the iPod Touch.
The Samsung Galaxy Player (SGP) sounds better in our car and on our home theater system than our iPod Touch 4g, and it plays louder than our iPod Touch too. It also sounds better using it's own internal speakers than the iPod Touch.
The SGP has a large screen which makes surfing the Internet very enjoyable. The screen is just the right size. I also own a Nook Color and it's screen is a little to large to carry around everywhere all the time. The SGP is the perfect size. It fits in your pockets and it feels about like a billfold if you carry it in your back pocket.
Two thumbs up also to Samsung for allowing access to all the Android Markets and not to just their own "Samsung Apps" market. Both the Apple iPod Touch and the Barnes & Noble Nook Color only allow you access to their company owned Markets. Which is why I ended up here today submitting this review. I decided to go online to the Samsung Apps website and check out what Samsung had available on their own market and to check out what's available specifically for our Samsung Galaxy Player. BTW, nice APP Website Samsung. While I was here I finally registered my SGP. We've been to busy having fun with our SGP to take the time to register it.
Anyway, back to my review. My wife and I both dislike iTunes and the need to sync our iPod regularly. iTunes is a resource hungry, unnecessarily complicated piece of software that has become even more difficult to use every since Apple activated their "Cloud" storage for their iPods, iPhones, & iPads, etc.
With our Samsung Player we don't mess with uploading our media to the "Cloud" which is very time consuming because like most people we have very fast Cable Internet Download speeds, but only modest Upload speeds. Therefore, uploading media regularly to the "cloud" with our iPod has become very tiresome. And in all honesty, we don't need it uploaded to the cloud. We just "drag and drop" our media to and from our computer to our Samsung Galaxy Player whenever we're in the mood for a change.
Yes, we are NOT using the "Cloud" with our Samsung Player, but the truth is since the Samsung Galaxy Player has an SD Card slot which accepts up to 32GB SD cards, we don't need online "cloud" storage. SD card storage is getting cheaper and with much larger storage capacities and in much smaller storage packages by the day. With more than one SD card we can completely change our media from just music, to just movies, or to just games and everything in between in a matter of seconds.
Apple's closed storage systems on all their products requires that you the consumer use their cloud for storage. And the more data you have, the more storage you will need. Therefore, sooner or later you will have to pay for more storage and you will have to continue to pay for that storage every year.
We on the other hand will be storing our media on our SD Cards, or own PCs, and our Network Storage Devices, which we can access not only from our own home WiFi Network or via Bluetooth, but also anywhere there is an Internet connection.
The Samsung Galaxy Player has impressed both of us so much so, that we will most likely be getting Samsung phones when our contract expires. And I am hopeful that Samsung will continue to offer even larger removable storage solutions for their devices in the future, and maintain the quality of this Samsung product.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Durable, Realistic color, Lightweight, big screen, touch sensitive screen
Cons: Not high def, not gorilla glass, no good case choices
