so far, so good

One hour after opening package printer up and running; req few extra mins to download software from the internet as opposed to using included CD. No problem w/CD but read it's best to go online to get lastest updated version of software. I am far from computer savvy but this was even easy for me, and I set it up as a wireless connection! Set up instructions were simple, easy to read and foolproof, follow them and you can't go wrong.
4 stars because it is a little loud. If it were printing continuously for an extended period I could definitely see it being a little irritating, but a page now and then shouldn't be a problem.

Poor print quality

The 845 does have ease of use and plenty of features, but it prints with streaks and banding. I have done all suggested maintenance, but there is no improvement. Nozzle checks reveal the same sections of print missing each time. This machine is only 2 months old and has never had a clean print.

Unbelievably slow copier & upgrade erased OCR app
on August 3, 2013

My 845 must be the slowest copier of this century. It can print computer material at about 1 or 2 seconds per page. But if I put a sheet on the glass for a copy, I have to wait about 2 minutes 15 seconds for a standard black and white! My other grievance is that the only reason I bought the 845 in the first place was because it had factory-installed an ABBYY OCR reader. OCR converts an image of text into editable print in case you don't know. About a month ago I learned that Epson had an upgrade available, so I downloaded and installed it. In the process the installation erased the OCR reader. When I contacted Epson, the support person said I would have to contact ABBYY for a re-installation. I haven't done that yet. Otherwise the printer works as I expected. Because of the unacceptably slow copying and shortsightedness in not maintaining the OCR with the upgrade, I give it one star. I would not recommend the 845 unless being able to actually see how fast another one copies. There is the possibility that my 845 has a defect peculiar to it that makes it copy so slowly.

Such as pain to change connection settings!
on August 5, 2013

We have had this Epson 845 for a while now and every time we reboot the router or I want to try to set it up as an IP printer it gets funky. It seems so painful to connect this or change the connections it appears they just did not ever think anyone would need to do this more than once. Should not be this hard to change the setup as needed. Unreal to me.

Consumer or Business Grade?
on January 30, 2016

The WorkForce 845 does not seem to do much to differentiate itself between a consumer-grade and a business grade, which seems to result in machine that is sort of in the middle. Making the right purchase decision with printer is tough based on the information provided by Manufacturers and this is no exception.
Hardware:
Does not work with FAT or exFAT USB drives.
Software:
Why doesn't Epson have a document management solution for home users? Scanning is supposed to cut back on paper clutter, but what's the point if you just end up with clutter on your computer and have just as much of a hard time finding stuff as you did when they were shoved in a filing cabinet. I think that file tags is the solution, but for whatever reason, no one seems to want to cooperate on a universal standard, except maybe for IDv1 for MP3 files.
Feedback for Epson:
Please consider making a product line for tech enthusiasts/support professionals. Such a printer could come with virtually no support in exchange for lots of user-replaceable parts, and an open API for developers. We're also long overdue for fax over ethernet, or at least some sort adapter to allow users to use their cellphones when sending faxes.

Epson Quality
on April 29, 2016

I have been using Epson Printers, Inks and Papers for as far back as I care to remember. The reason: printer quality is superior to all others and I never have problems with them. Paper and ink quality is superior as well.

It works well, so far dependable. I like having two trays of paper. When one becomes empty the printer uses paper from the second tray without prompting. The sd card and usb ports are handy, but only for photo files. The printer doesn't appear to recognize pdf files on the sd card or usb flash drives. Ink cartridges are easy to change, but the large or extended capacity ink cartridges are necessary....the standard ink cartridge just doesn't hold enough ink to last a reasonable number of prints, copies. Scanner works well both from the glass and from the Epson Scan software on my desktop. I use an older mac powerpc g5 running os 10.5.8. I have not used the fax yet, so cannot offer use of it.
