Great Value

A very good upgrade to the Samsung unit we had. The online applications for Netflix and web video are much improved, but the biggest issue with the Samsung was in playing a disk. We are not having the slow start, high speed spinning of the disk prior to being able to view the movie.

SONY blue-ray disc players are ok. They are not great. When you play discs, blue-ray or regular, they stop playing in random spots. This, I've found, is inherent in all of the SONY blue-ray disc players I've owned. I have a SONY TV and a SONY amp. I bought the SONY blue-ray for the compatibility with the other components. But, for the price I paid for the machine, I guess it works well.

I replaced another well known player with this Sony model and was shocked by how fast it loaded compared to my other unit and how well all the controls function. So far a superior unit !

Finally fell into my price range

We've been avoiding Blu Rays for years, but this year they finally reached a price point even I couldn't pass up.
The image quality is superb, much better than the up-scaling DVD players we've been getting instead, and at 1080p, better than streaming through our Xbox 360. It's a Blu Ray, so it can be a bit on the slow side. Also, it forces the TV to switch over to the input that the player is using when you turn it on or inset a disc. I don't always want to switch over right away, as I don't really want to watch the loading screen for the minute or so that it takes to boot up, and I dislike my equipment forcing me to do things.
But overall, it's a nice addition to our setup, and I'm glad to finally be able to play the Blu Ray discs we've slowly been getting over the years because the Blu Ray/DVD combo package is sometimes cheaper than the DVD alone.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Plays Blu-Ray Discs Fine
on October 30, 2014

I wanted the player for DVDs and Blu-Rays. It plays them perfectly. I'm unable to play streaming movies, probably because my Wifi can't deliver the movie fast enough. If there's a way to download the movie first and then play it, I haven't found it. The owner's manual is not helpful.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hello Corporal, thank you for your comment, unfortunately on this Blu Ray player you cannot download the movie since the unit does not have an internal memory to download information, the requirements for the streaming internet application is to have a minimum of 2.5mbps

Not as good as the 3100
on July 9, 2014

I had two of the 3100s and figured that this would be comparable; however, I found that the quality is not as good, it crashes and requires that the power be unplugged to reboot. It looses network connections, even with the wireless router within 3 feet of the device. I've mostly been loyal to Sony, but no more. Sony is living on its past reputation. That will catch up to them quickly.
