Artisan 837 scanning
on December 13, 2011

Had an HP Photosmart 3310, was very happy it, it lasted six years of heavy home/family use.
The wireless setup of the Artisan 837 was a breeze as was the software setup in OS10.5. The network printing (letter and photo) seems to work as advertised.
The scanning does not appear as the menus would have you guess. Not until you read the manual do you find that you have to be in front of the scanner to operate. . . The "scan to PC or PDF" only works with a USB cable connection on the Mac, apparently because my computer does not show up in the "scan to" list. Don't get me wrong, the scanner works fine wirelessly, but you have to launch the scanner software, run over to the scanner and put the page to be scanned in the adf or on the glass, and back to scan from the application on the mac desktop. And if you preview scan using the adf, you get to run back to the scanner and do it again for the final scan because it doesn't remember the page, just the scan window size and location.
Have not tried the FAX yet.
The printer looks nice all closed up and the "cool" output tray door drops when printing is activated, but the paper will fall from the printer because the output tray will not catch the paper unless the mechanism tray is extended (like the scanning, needs to be attended). So more than likely the door will always be in the open "dust collection" position. And all that nice glossy black will look good with dust and scratches (did I say the 3310 was metallic grey).
My wife liked the responsiveness of the control panel and the print/copy/fax features.

Pretty good

The quality of prints is high, the lip from the view screen makes it hard to scan from a book and the moving components in the paper tray are not as robust as the rest of the machine. Also it takes the machine longer to get ready to print than I have experienced in other machines.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

As an amatuer photographer, photo quality was a priority. The Artisan 837 has impeccable print quality and detail. I would recommend it to everyone who wants exceptional print-quality pictures.

Paper Tray vs No Tray

Since Epson no longer makes the RX595, I replaced it with an Artisan 837 because I wanted wireless printing and faxing. If the Artisan 837 handled paper like the RX595, it would be perfect.
The Artisan 837 does what I want but I am unhappy with the paper tray business. To change paper, the tray must be removed. In addition, to load envelopes, two guides must be moved, also. You have to do this again to get back to letter size paper. On the RX595, if you want to print labels (on letter size forms), all you need do is place the labels in front of the standard letter paper. To print envelopes, all that was needed was to remove the standard paper and move the guide to the right. No Tray!
Other than that, I recommend the Epson products.

--> !! Awesome Printer !! <--

Let me just start by saying that this printer rocks! It so far has printed on every type of paper that I've put into it, from 100% post consumer recycled 20# to the 80# cover I frequently use for printing gift tags to the absolutely STUNNING photos that are printed on the Epson Premium glossy photo paper. I love the 5 color inks it's a big jump from the days of running 3 color inkjets.
The wireless set-up was a breeze! On my network I have 3 macs and 2 windows based computers. I've been able to so far scan wireless on 10.6 and 10.7 OSX as well as Win 7 and XP. I've yet to try a wireless fax from the computers but it seems that you need to have a USB connection for that function on the OSX computers. I'm still in the process of figuring out the Scan to Email function wirelessly.
Overall the product has been awesome, in hindsight I wish that I had gone with the Artisan 835, as it looks like the USB and memory card slot are not hidden behind a plastic 'door' which in my opinion is a better design as in the Artisan 837 if you have a chip or regular sized thumb-drive the 'door' will not close. On the Artisan 835 the 'door' seems to fall just short of the card and USB slots allowing the printer to be closed up and still have access to these amenities.

A good looking piece of equipment although somewhat over weight.Easy to set up and was pleasantly surprised at the speed in producing excellant colours.Have not had it long enough to compare the output but suspect these will be at the very least reasonable.Have experienced difficulty in scanning to email.I am told I must have a windows ID...but the one I used was not acceptable and after struggling for a couple of hours I am left with the impression the whole idea is to co-erce me into a certain system that starts with "HOT"
