On the Fence

After a great run with my Epson Photo1680 it was showing its wear and then my scanner also died. I decided to go to an All in One. The Epson Artisan 730 All- in One printer received favorable reviews and it seemed to be a good value. I have had it for a few months now and find myself getting very frustrated with the paper feed in particular- lots of jams or lots of blank sheets along with the printed ones. Not sure if this is typical but certainly not desirable as I always seem to be checking for jams, and reloading the paper.

Although I have bought and used a lot of Epson printers, I have found they do not last very long. I have came to the conclusion unless it was purchased on sale, it becomes very expensive. durability is not it's strong point. I'm thinking, if this printer does not last one year, I will look for another brand. The extended warranty is a joke. I shipping cost is more than the printer is worth.
Thanks for asking.

Falling short of its potential

The Epson Artisan 730 All-in-One Printer is an inexpensive printer with high quality photo printing. It doesn't come with photo printing software for your PC, so simple everyday tasks like cropping and resizing need to be accomplished with other software, or you can try the built-in capabilities from the front panel by using one of the many storage mediums the printer can read directly. The tiny LCD won't make the process easy, but it will suffice in a pinch.
The printer driver gives good control of features through the printer's properties page including color profiles for several Epson paper types. My printing found the colors more subdued and the scenes generally darker than expected using the supplied Ultra Premium Photo Glossy media. Selecting the 1.8 gamma color profile helped significantly. The images promised by the 5760 x 1440 DPI and seven-color process might take a bit of tuning to find, but borderless prints are indistinguishable from process photos when high quality images and a little experience are used.
The printer comes with an interface software bundle to monitor the printer status, automate scans initiated from the device, and automate printing by monitoring folders and automatically performing defined actions on the contents. I couldn't get any of these programs to do anything on Windows 7 and the documentation as to what ports need to be open in your firewalls or any other details of the interface are missing from Epson's documentation. A poor state of affairs for a mainstream consumer product. I'm a software developer and a fair hack at system administration, so don't think you will power through this despite my failure -- the software is buggy and poorly documented. If you want the features described, you might want to look elsewhere.
Despite the failed software, initiating scans from a PC work well using Windows' built-in capabilities, and printing goes without a hitch. The printer has a web interface to read the state of the printer, and you can read/write files to storage media inserted in the device. You can scan to removable media, too; so it's easy to complete a scan job from the device despite it's poor connection to your PC by simply carrying the media back to your PC to complete the transfer. All in all, the capability is there; but the software gets a big what-the-heck?
Epson has rated this printer's speed using the ISO PPM standard. Not many manufacturers are willing to do that since the number is a fraction of what one might expect. The stringent testing parameters mean this printer's 9.6 ISO PPM rating is both real and indicative of extreme speed. Printers rated by their manufacturers at 30 PPM may have trouble competing with this Epson because those self-claimed speeds are apparently the sheet feeder's maximum; putting ink on the paper slows things down considerably. Epson has made a video showing the printer-line's speed to demonstrate and clarify the rating.
In summary: the variety of access methods allow me to get the results I want, so I'm pretty satisfied while still disappointed knowing some slick features of this printer are inaccesable to me.

Great printer

We have had this Artisan 730 for almost 4 years. It has never
faltered. No paper jams. It quits printing when any ink color runs out. That is fine. I am not too lazy to install a new cartridge. Nor too cheap to buy a new one. Prints great photos too! The prints come out fast and never a blemish
or fadeout.

Worst printer I've ever owned

Worked fine for the first week. Since then it has been nothing but trouble. Constantly getting paper jams. Grabs more than one piece of paper as it prints--spitting out some blank sheets and some partially printed sheets.Doesn't print photos well--leaves lines across the picture. Wish I'd never bought it.

Greetings.
I bought this printer as a replacement for a competitors printer that lasted only a year.
Ink is cheaper on the Epson. The touch screen is very accurate and fast.
I originally connected it directly to my Mac mini, then removed the cord and went with the wifi, and the quality is the same.
Setting up this printer was easier than any other printer I have ever owned. A "feature rich" printer. Its nice to have the extra features, even if I don't use them. Better than needing a feature in the future, and not having it.
I am very satisfied with the quality of the built unit "sleek, low footprint, solid." The quality photo prints are better than anything I have used in the past.
I like the fact that the paper tray sits inside the unit, and does not stick out. Pulling the print collector out before usage is kind of a hassle, but it retracts into the unit when not in use, and is very clean looking.
Thanks for reading.
