Product Does Not Work On My Samsung 46 3D LED TV
on March 31, 2015
Posted by: Dow20000
I purchased this Sony Blu-ray player BDP-S5500 on March 27, 2015 for use with my Samsung 46" 3D LED TV model UN46FH6030FXZA. I tried for 4 days and could not get it to work properly. The problem is that when I turn the unit on, a Blu-ray logo is displayed, then a blue screen flashes and the screen goes black. No error, no message, nothing. The TV then puts up a message saying "No Signal". Then after 8-10 minutes, the Home screen finally pops up. The unit will then function as normal, except there's no audio. But I can play a DVD, perform the set-up and access the apps like Netflix and Hulu. I can also turn the unit off and on. However, if I turn the TV off/on or switch to another port # cable# and return then the unit has to be re-initialized. Again, I have to turn it off/on, the screen flashes, and it does nothing for up to 10 minutes. I spent 4 days working with Sony's support. Case #E61005155. Basically they are a group of young people in the Philippines, who walk you through the same scenarios in the manual. They are hard to understand, talk too fast, and constantly put you on hold. I had to ask them to repeat everything. Imagine how long I was on the phone while they asked me to turn the unit on and off repeatedly and it took 10 minutes to get the Home screen. After going through level 1 and 2 support multiple times and they could not resolve the issue, they would blame it on the Samsung TV. I called Samsung and opened case #2134722809. Samsung verified the TV was working properly. Sony then said it must be a bad player. So I went and purchased an identical unit. Same exact problems. Sony's support then said it must not be compatible with my TV. The techs at the retail store agreed. Apparently this is a relatively new model and at some time in the future, there may be a software update to download that will address these issues.
Aside from the problems I have described, I was able to test a DVD on the unit #after the 10 minute initialization# and the picture was excellent. I like the compact size, and the new functions I was not able to try. I would rate it as excellent if they could just fix the 10 minute delay and audio problems.

Purchased from Best Buy. Used it 2 or 3 times. Stopped working. Tried to return to Best Buy, they would not take it. Must sent it to a Sony repair place. Jury is still out how that will work. The help desk person treated me like a 2 year old. Are you sure you turned it on? did you put a DVD in it? was it a blue Ray? etc. Then he wanted me to replace the HDMI cable.... Has anyone ever seen an HDMI cable go bad?

Disappointed

It does not support closed captioning on some of older DVDs. In view of this deficiency it would be hard to unequivocally recommend it.

Hello Domer, thank you for your message. Closed Caption Feature is available for customers in the USA only. Closed caption (CC) information is not available from a cable set-top box, satellite receiver, DVD player, or Blu-ray Disc® (BD) player connected to the TV using an HDMI® cable. When using this type of connection, use the subtitle feature of the source device instead of the CC of the TV or connect the source device to the television using a component or composite video cable. CC is only supported when using an analog output that is 480i.

Very Good Product

Very good product ... I look the small footprint. Only a couple of things so far. One time the dvd tray didn't want to open, for some reason. After messing with it for a little while, it finally did open. The NETFLIX button works just fine, taking you to NETFLIX; but, then the screen tends to freeze sometimes. Other than that, it's working very good.

I bought this thinking SONY would have great products for streaming becuase of PlayStation technology. The streaming quality has always been slow and frustrating with the buffering wheel of death stuck at 25% until i restart. I use my Roku stick that has no problem. When i tried to watch DVDs it doesn't recognize or claims the DVD is faulty when all DVDs can be read in any other player i have. This is waste of money.

There are occasions, especially with Pandora, that it freezes and I have to unplug everything and start it up again. I have not been able to find out the reason why. Otherwise, it is great and would recommend it if it weren't for this one fault.
