Grest Refrigerator. Horrible Ice Maker.

Brand new Ice maker was a hassle due to ice cubes freezing together and making a huge mess when dispensing. Seems like it only makes around 10 cubes a day so if you like alot of ice you better buy another fridge. Now Ice maker has completely quit. Expected alot more from kitchen aid.

Early Problems

I have two issues:
1. The shelf with drawer attached is a pain to use because the drawer always sticks and is all but impossible to pull out.
2. The ice maker hatch froze shut last night and could not dispense ice. I had to manually remove the ice that clogged against it and then work it open.
I'm not a happy camper right now after what I paid for this device.

Limited options and I'm so happy this was the one I chose.

I searched high and low for a replacement for our 13 year old side-by-side. I really wanted a french door style as I was sick of not being able to store an entire turkey or a frozen pizza in our freezer. I also didn't want to sacrifice the "swing out" space required for a bottom freezer with a single top door AND I wanted ice and water on the door. So I ended at a French Door. I thought it'd be so easy to pick one out but quickly realized our builder put us in a pickle. We have a full wall that extends 55" on the left side of where the refrigerator sits. (If you are ever designing a kitchen, DO NOT DO THIS.) This means that the left door cannot be opened even a full 90 degrees because the handle hits the wall. If the door can't open past 90 degrees, the full bottom fresh food drawer in most models will not open. It's not even a possibility. I spent countless hours on the internet looking at models and found a few options. From memory, I think they were Viking, Maytag or this Kitchenaid. The Viking was just crazy expensive so that was out. That left Maytag or Kitcheaid. The Kitcheaid was the only one that came in white so this is the model we chose. (With two kids in the house, I refuse to be a slave to keeping stainless clean!) Even though I couldn't find a model to go see in person, I was confident ordering it through Lowe's because they have a 30 day "Appliance Advantage" that allows you to return it if you don't like it. I figured we had nothing to lose. (And they price match!) We had this model installed nearly 2 months ago and I'm still happy with this selection!
It is worth mentioning that we do have to pull out the refrigerator if we want to take out the ice maker. It's on tile and I can do it myself with a tiny bit of effort. I don't consider myself a strong person at all so this is quite impressive. It rolls very easily.
FRESH FOOD
The single drawer in the large fresh food compartment can be moved to where it works for you. We use it for cheese and it does it's job as well as a drawer can.
All of the shelves are adjustable.
The door compartments on the left hand side are practically worthless since they are so small but I really don't even mind. I store vitamins on that side and sticks of butter would fit on the top shelf if desperate.
The ice maker takes up about 1/3 of the top shelf but, going from a 19.1 cubic food side by side, I don't even notice that space.
The shelves on the right door are all adjustable and hold a ton.
The glass shelves are all very easy to clean and I love that the bottom shelf is glass through to the fresh food drawer. Helps me remember about the options in there.
The large fresh food drawer, above the freezer is a DREAM! The temperature is adjustable in the main compartment. We use it for vegetables and then some yogurt and cheese that my kids (4 & 6) can easily grab on their own. It comes with the drawer divided into 3 "columns" and you get one adjustable divider. Honestly when we first got it I didn't think that was enough but it's now fine. I really love that drawer!
FREEZER
The bottom freezer took some getting used to just for arranging my food but I really like it now. I can fit in a frozen pizza but I'm not as confident about a turkey. I can definitely fit it in the fresh food compartment so no worries there.
The freezer has 4 drawer and they all slide very easily. I use one for vegetables, one for proteins, one for breads and one for convenience foods. I must admit that I have it packed full but it is very usable space.
FRONT PANEL
Some may not realize that this refrigerator comes with a sort of "mini" version of the half moon ice cubes. I believe they would fit better in water bottles and such. I don't use them for that but someone may care if they used water bottles a lot.
I honestly use the control panel very little. There are light controls so you can leave on a night light, there is a door ajar feature (which I also appreciate), a water amount selector which I also don't use much. Also, there's a tray that pulls out to allow larger containers to sit to be filled with water. I guess that'd be handy but it doesn't take long to fill anything so I typically hold it.
My kids can reach to put ice and water in their cups but cannot reach the buttons. I see this as a plus. ;)
I've also seen some concerns about the ice capacity. We are a family of 4 (two are pint size) and I use ice all day long and I'm home every single day. My husband doesn't use any ice but I easily use the amount of two typical people. My kids use it here and there. After getting the ice storage built up in the first couple of days, we haven't run out at all. If I was having a big party I may start pulling some out to store in the freezer but it'd be an exception.
NOISE
I have read some reviews that say the ice is very loud. We thought the entire thing ran louder when we first got it but I think we tend to notice new noises and then they just become background noise. (I put a new light timer above my kitchen cabinets a couple of weeks ago and I could hear that hum over the refrigerator. Makes me think the fridge isn't very loud.) The ice does make noise when dropping but, let's be honest, don't they all? Also, one little thing that took some getting used to, when they ice tray is filled with water, it pulses about 12 times and you do hear it if the rest of the house is quiet. Again though, it's not a reason that I would tell someone not to get this model
ISSUES
We have had one very slight, cosmetic issue since having it install. There is a silver accent around the temperature controller for the fresh food drawer and that essentially became unstuck (it's just a sticker). I called it in and a service man was here within days. He told me we could super glue it and I said I wanted a new one considering it wasn't even 30 days old and we spent good money on it. He understood and ordered a new one. He had to replace the entire bottom plastic piece but it is replaced. If it happens again I may superglue it but you'd think they could attach that with something more durable.
This isn't an issue but another cosmetic thing that drives me a little wacky. The screws they use to attache the handles are silver and they really, in my humble opinion, stand out on the all white refrigerator. I keep meaning to buy some white nail polish to fix it myself but you'd think that's something Kitchenaid would do.... include white tipped screws.
Pros: easy to use, Convenient Features, Performance, Design

We have had this KitchenAid model for approximately one month and it has made our kitchen much more convenient with respect to the amenities and square footage it provides. It is our hope that the quality name of KitchenAid holds true with this product as it has with our other kitchen appliances (small and large). This particular model has a energy efficiency rating as well (see amazing reviews).

It's still early on in ownership, but so far we love it. Seems to have more room than our old one even though they are the same size.
