Quality Printer But Expensive To Use
on June 16, 2011

I've had this printer for about a month now. I was excited to find a sold ink printer in my price range for my small coffee company. I had been looking for a printer that could reproduce images that were crisp and not run if gotten wet. I've enjoyed my Xerox Phaser 6130 but felt it was time to upgrade. I was glad the printer came with 2 sticks of each color since I knew that replacement ink sticks are expensive. But with a range of 2,000 sheets per stick, I thought this would work out okay. I was shocked to discover that after printing 40 sheets--with roughly 20% coverage--the first set of ink sticks had only 40% remaining. I called Xerox Direct about this and discovered a few things you should be aware of before buying this printer. This printer needs roughly 50% of an ink stick to fill each reservoir. Every time the printer goes from sleep to ready mode, some ink is purged and ends up in the catch tray. If you turn off the printer, or if the printer loses power, all the reservoirs are purged and refilled again. With the average cost of an ink stick being $50, this power loss will cost you a whopping $100!
Pros: Easy To Setup, Excellent Print Quality, Easy To Use
Cons: Noisy, Large Footprint, Pricey Replacement Ink
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Pros/Cons

I was looking for a color printer that was more cost effective than the ink jet printer. Because my printing is intermittent, the ink in my ink jet printer would dry up. It was also expensive.
I bought the Color Qube 8570 as an alternative. I have had the printer for about 3 years.
Pros:
Print quality is very good. When printing photos, the printing is good close to photo quality.
Paper handling is good. I have been able to print on different sizes of paper without difficulty. I have printed 3"X5" cards, Christmas cards, letter size and legal size. I have printed card stock without problems. I like that the paper tray can hold an entire ream of paper.
The cost of printing color is comparable (probably less) to a color laser printers. But I have not seen a color laser that matches the print quality of the Color Qube for photos and pictures.
Cons:
Because the ink is made of wax, the ink can melt if it gets hot. If you leave something printed on the Color Qube in a hot car in the summer, the ink may melt an run. I made the mistake of using a laser printer to print on the back side of a page printed on the Color Qube printer. Big mistake! If you want to combine Color Qube printing and laser printing, do the laser printing first. Another problem with the wax based ink is that you cannot write on it. If you want to mark up something printed on the Color Qube, you cannot write over the wax print.

Might be ok as a printer that is exclusively for high volume printing of batches of flyers or brochures, but it is not a good general office printer. It is frustrating to print checks because it takes several attempts to get it to pull paper form the manual feed tray. The user interface of the print driver is very unrefined compared to HP drivers. After printing one time the print driver reported that the waste tray was full and so we emptied it taking note that around one quarter of the starter solid ink was now in the waste tray. Plugged it back in and turned it on and printed again and it says the waste tray needs to be emptied again. When the printer is turned on it prints 8 single sided startup pages even though we have the startup page set to off. When it goes into energy saver mode it turns on the LCD backlight so we have to cover the LCD because the printer is in a room where controlled lighting is required. Overall this seems like a beta version that shouldn't have been released. We have had an HP grayscale duplex printer for over 10 years that is much more refined and doesn't waste so much of our time so we are keeping the HP and getting rid of this new Xerox.
Pros: Excellent Print Quality
Cons: Unfriendly user interface, Hard To Use, Slow Operation

Prints great, love that there is no toner cartradge, love that it holds lots of paper. BUT it makes the most anoying high pitched noise / hum. It sounds almost like a dog wistle
(no, im not a dog).
I find myself constandly putting it to sleep or turning on music so i won't hear it.

I really like the printer for all the quialities mentioned above but I have one dislike, it is the loudest printer we have ever used. You should think about placement and know that it will make a significant amount of noise.
