Mac simplicity; great value

Finally, a printer that thinks like a Mac. Easy wireless connection to the Airport, then Snow Leopard detects "local printers" and auto-installs the latest software. Up and running in 10 minutes after unpacking and physical setup. Fast and fully featured. Unit is rather large but reasonable for the feature set (auto doc feeder, etc). Ink is pricey, but at least there are separate cartridges for each color. My second Pixma - the previous one lasted 6 years of medium-duty usage.
Pros: Easy Setup, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: Large Footprint
I would recommend this to a friend!

In search of printer that last more than 12 mos

Decided to buy a more upscale printer in hopes of getting one that lasts more than a year. MX882 first was just annoying, would spend several minutes cycling at each new job to print. Then became necessary to turn off and on before it would do its 3 minute maintenance. Then it wouldn't turn off at the on/off power button and had to unplug each time to reset. Now gives the message: Incorrect type Print Head - though nothing has changed. Made sure all updates installed. It would not allow use of the Setup function to do deep cleaning so I washed it manually. Reseated it twice. Does not work. Is there a reliable printer out there anywhere?

Don't buy

I had a lot of problems with this printer. Overall, at best, it is an average printer. I am disappointed at the photos it prints. Canon has done everything to prevent you from refilling the ink tanks, and the new ones cost almost as much as the printer itself. Don't buy it.
Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, Dull Tones & Colors, High Ink Consumption, Flimsy Construction
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

MX882 fax connection problem
on May 5, 2011

The MX882 cannot automatically receive a fax unless the household answering machine is plugged directly into it. All fax devices have to have a phone wire but, other brands don't require the answering machine sitting downstairs to be plugged directly into the fax device sitting upstairs. This limitation makes the MX882 unusable for me. The design fix is simple. Canon, get with it!
Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Difficult to use, Large Footprint
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Been in the process of relocating for the last 30 days and has been great to receive emailed forms for the process. Hand sign the forms then scan them and email them back. GREAT!

Expected Better

Newest of Canon printers we've had but not the best. Had for over 1 year and frustrated. Color prints, mostly indoor or in the shade photos, have orange cast and come out underexposed even when using Canon camera, paper and ink. Scanner tends to slighly crop documents, most noticable on forms where printed material may go very close to document edge. Sucks up ink like crazy...suspect over cleaning of print heads. Can't mix wireless and wired; have to configure for one or the other. Duplex printing has been nice as well as document feeder.
Pros: none
Cons: Slow Print Speed, Difficult Setup, Low Quality Output, unreliable, color cast on photos
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Look elsewhere

Works OK doing basic functions, but it completely non-intuitive. Anytime I want to try something I don't do every week, the machine doesn't work and I spend an hour trying to make it work. I bill hourly, so the lost time exceeds the cost of the machine. Total waste.
Very few people fax anymore. I had to send a fax today. That should be pretty simple, but after 40 minutes and 4 tries, I gave up. Machine kept saying the line was busy, but I called it on my phone 5 times and it plainly was not busy - picked up right away. The interface on this machine is badly designed.
