The best consumer all-in-one printer for the money

My previous printer (Canon Pixma MP600) that I purchased over 4 years ago had served me well. It was the most reliable printer I have ever owned.
Now, 4 years later, my needs have changed. An all-in-one that can fax, add AirPrint technology and print + scan wirelessly.
1. Setup Setting up the Canon Pixma MX882 was a breeze. First, establish your wireless connection BEFORE installing the software. If you install the software first, your printer won't be recognized wirelessly.
2. Compare Print speed is outstanding! I compared this printer (in various stores) to other top-of-the-line competing models and this printer was the champ (I timed the speed with my watch).
Print quality is also outstanding! As with the previous step, I actually took the print copies home with me and compared them all side-by-side.
3. Features The interactive touch panel is the first feature I wish to praise. While many competitors are choosing a touch-screen, Canon decided to stay with real push buttons.
I am a fan of push buttons personally because that makes selecting options much easier with tactile feedback for every button pressed.
As you select the various options (copy, fax, scan, card or setup), the interactive buttons illuminate to show their functions. Think of it as a display for each button that changes, depending on the operation.
Printing wirelessly is the easiest way to go. You need only a wireless router connected to your modem to establish your WIFI connection and you are all set.
I have printed wirelessly from both of my macs (at the same time) and it just works!
The print will pause between jobs so you know when one print job is complete before the next one begins. Also, the front panel will automatically open before the first sheet is printed, so you do not need to manually open the front tray.
Like my previous Canon printer, I have not experienced any paper jams (I use a 24 LB Inkjet paper), not the cheap paper. My motto is: You get what you pay for. Use the good paper if you want good prints and you won't be filling your trash with mistakes!
While it is obvious that the front tray holds 150 sheets of paper, the rear tray also holds 150 sheets and is best for envelopes.
During a recent print job, I had to print an envelope and this printer automatically printed the envelope from the rear tray without the need to manually select it.
Faxing is very easy to do. Just insert your sheets face down, with page 1 on top into the auto feeder, enter the phone number, then select the black or color button to begin.
If you experience a fax error, it will print an error report. Once the fax goes through, it will be fine.
The scanning is a breeze. Just select your computer on the network and scan (it can only scan to one computer at a time), but all of your computers will show up on the display.
The card input works for a variety of memory cards and usb drives. The lower right panel has 3 slots for the memory cards and the usb slot is found just below the panel, directly to the right of the front paper tray.
This printer is very quiet in operation and works very well. There are times when the printer will perform automatic maintenance for the ink cartridges (as with my previous Canon model) and that's the reason why the Canon printers I have owned have been very reliable.
A feature that I enjoy are templates. You can select a template from the Setup menu and print out numerous types of designs, such as a graph paper, a lined page, a list (great for generating shopping lists or product comparisons), etc.
In summary, when compared to the competition and in real-world ownership, the Canon Pixma MX882 has earned not just my trust, but my recommendation.

This printer works great when it is working. I use this printer for the occasional paper for school and powerpoints. It scans fast and integrates well with Mac OSX. I do not print color often and use mainly black and white printing 99% of the time. But After using it, I am finding that when you run out of any color cartridge, you cannot print ANY document. Even if I am printing a word document and telling the settings only to use greyscale printing. This printer NEEDS to have all the cartridges full in order to print black and white, and thats why I gave this a 1-star for satisfaction
Pros: High Quality Output
Cons: Large Footprint
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Nice All in One

This is a really nice printer. I am enjoying using it. I only have one really negative comment. I want a manual, hard copy, in my hand, out of the box. I have read the instructions for printing it myself and it starts out by warning it takes a lot of ink and a lot of paper. Then the instructions for doing it seem unclear. How about a manual in the box when we purchase it?
Pros: reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed
Cons: Large Footprint, no printed manual

Best Multi-Function I have owned
on November 24, 2011

Our MX882 is on the run constantly with 3 teens, my work and the wife being a teacher. We have owned this machine for almost a year and it is has run flawlessly. Copy, Fax, and print quality is crisp and clear. Color cartridges aren't tremendously large but last longer than I would have expected with all the printing we do. After a a lot of Internet research, we decided to give Canon a try. There are no regrets so far. Before the Canon, we had gone through three small business/home and office type multi-function machines in about 18 months. Warranty or not, that is terrible reliability for the other major brand.
Pros: price per features, pretty good ink use rate, clear print fax and copies, copies look original, easy double sided copy and print
Cons: the ink cartridge could cost a bit less

Best All in One Yet!

This is a great machine. I love Canon for color photos so I thought I'd try the all-in-one. Extremely surprised at all it can do. Double sided scanning, faxing, printing. We have six computers with different operating systems and setup was a breeze. I can scan something and tell it which computer to put it on. No more scanning with one computer and transferring the file to another computer, it does it automatically. I can fax something from any computer and it's a breeze. Now quality. I also have the Canon i9900 which prints large 13x19 pictures at great quality and I was surprised at the good quality this printer did on photos and it was fast and easy. I also love the individual ink cartridges it saves a lot of money buying only what you need. Now, as my name shows, I'm over 65 and was able to set it up with out a problem. Need I say more??
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Exceeded Expectations in every way!

This AIO has exceeded my expectations in every way... from the number of features, to the printing speed and quality.
The auto feed is so fast to copy and fax. The large buttons, clear screen and nice software make it easy and a pleasure to use.
I'm confused about some of the other reviews here. As stated in the specifications "Beautiful, Borderless Photos Fast: Print a borderless, 4" x 6" photo in approximately 20 seconds." So, yes, it does borderless printing. For fax, there are multiple modes of receiving faxes, you just need to set it up right.
Pros: Compact Design, fast print speed, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Couldn't Be More Pleased

I purchased this product to replace a troublesome all-in-one from a different manufacturer. The set up for this machine is very simple and takes about 1/2 hour, including the time required to download software. Setting up the fax and wireless connection is a piece of cake. The print quality is excellent. My important documents look great and I've printed several borderless photos that really do look like they came from a photo lab (another review says that this machine will not do borderless printing, but it does). The double-sided printing and scanning feature works great and is definitely a time and resource saver. The user interface doesn't seem quite as intuitive as some other models, but I certainly would not consider it to be difficult to use. This is a great choice for a small business or home office.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Lightweight/Portable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Overall Great Printer with Great Features

We have a mixed network of MACs and PCs, and had 2 printers, which we were able to replace with the MX882. All the computers are connected wirelessly. We wanted a 4 in 1. The printer has many features that were not available on our old printers- such as fax, document feeder for malti-page copying or scanning, and duplex printing. I like that each color has its own cartridge, and you can set it up to print duplex automatically. Felt the printer was a good value, comared to other printers that offered the similar features. (Looked closely at 2 others). Some of the other features that i tested that seemed to work well are printing envelopes, scanning documents, scanning pictures, and copying.
The printer was easy to set up by following the step by step instructions. I had one question that I needed to call technical support about, and they were easy to reach and were able to asnwer my question. I can't yet speak to ink usage, because we have only been using the product for about 2 weeks, but it seems reasonable. Overall, we are very satisfied with this purchase
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use, lots of features
Cons: Large Footprint
