HORRIBLE

This device lives up to its name when doing research in online forums; A WASTE OF MONEY. My older XR performs lightening fast and YES my router is set up properly as well as the authentication method, ports, psychic channels and anything else you could possible imagine. WILL NOT PLAY IN 1080P mode even though I have given the player 30MBPS in the bandwidth shaper. I think the player was hurried into production and such as the iPhone 4 and its infamous antenna problems, this player, the ROKU XD 1080P player does NOT even come close to performing to stated standards. YES my television is selected in setup to accept 1080p devices and yes my router is dual band N300 running WPA2-AES and is in the same room as the player; has also been in different rooms as well. Before the techno geek responds to this thread, I will state ALL WIFI SECURITY PROTOCOLS HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTED INCLUDING DMZing THE DEVICE. I have noted (even in open air) the device over-heats. It just so seems this device was manufactured by the inhabitants of the lost civilization of the Incans as I have (other than new Chevys', US-made VW's and BUICKS) never seen a piece of technology DOWNGRADED despite its new GREATER AND BETTER propaganda spewed forth by Roku. Oddly, despite hard-wiring previously as well as giving the device enough bandwidth to power the next evolution of Earth, it will NOT PLAY IN 1080P on ANY of the 3 brand spanking new LED 1080P RAZOR-EDGE flat screen televisions in which I have. It plays in 720P mode ALWAYS even though 1080P is selected. Not to mention the countless interruptions during streaming as well as the spontaneous reboots which require running the initial setup process all over again. When it comes down to it, I feel ROKU has deceived the consumer and deserves punishment. I'm certain they attempted to cheaply manufacture this "NEW" player. I am inclined to start a class-action suit against ROKU for deceiving it's loyal followers. For the meantime, I have reverted to using my older XR player. Is there no end? C'mon ROKU, step up to plate and admit you made huge mistakes and empty your greedy little pockets and give us our money back before I have to use the courts and take it by force.

my roku hd never got off the ground. note that the Wifi feature doesnt work at about 50ft from the router. my prime tv and enter.center is downstairs. i have everything off my router in upstairs room.all other pcs an printers work great wirelessly. the roku did not connect. I scanned and it picked up my network but could not connect.[...] you mus be within 40ft of router. But any decent wifi device should be good for at least 60ft or more.So buyers beware; dont buy unless your router is close (30ft) to the tv you are planning to use.
Pros: Compact
Cons: Inconsistent performance, Difficult to set up
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I purchased one of these for my living room about 2 weeks ago and I loved it so much that I purchased 2 more for my bedrooms! I was shocked by how tiny it was but that is definitely a bonus. The remote is very simple but in this world of huge multifunction, multi button, universal remotes I actually appreciate that as well. It took me less than 10 minutes to set my Roku up, it was easy to connect to my TV, easy to connect to my home wireless network and it was easy to connect with my Hulu Plus and Netflix accounts. Definitely keep your computer handy while you are setting up and that will speed up your set up. I haven't had any problems at all with my Roku so far, and I am actually going to use this to downgrade to just basic cable. Instead of paying over $100 a month for cable I will now just pay $40 - $20 for basic cable and $20 for a Hulu Plus and Netflix account. And I will have access to almost all of the TV shows that I enjoy and a LOT more movies that I didn't have access to with cable. I do have a few small con's about the product. First, fast forwarding in movies and TV shows isn't as smooth as it is with cable DVR's. Second, while there are a lot of great channels available on Roku, I wish that there were more, and hopefully this will happen over time as Roku / internet TV gains popularity. I would LOVE to see a live NBA and NFL streaming channel, that's the only thing I miss by not having upgraded cable service. But with the money I'm saving I'd say it's a good trade off, especially in these tougher economic times!
Pros: Easy to use, Compact, Great value, Video selection, High quality picture, Easy to set up, Built in Wi-Fi
Cons: Want more video choices

This is the best kept secret around!! I bought mine [...]because I wanted to be able to get NetFlix on my TV, but didn't want to spend a few hundred dollars on gaming systems[...].took it home set it up in about 15 minutes and not only had NetFlix, but a lot of other FREE movie channels as well. My only complaint is the installation. The "on screen" instructions were not very clear. Had to guess about what to do next. After I got it working, piece of cake. Really like the system and options. Would definatly recommend the middle priced box (XD), as it provided us with more options then the HD box.
