Bad Picture Quality

At first, I thought I had a bad unit. The Roku-XD produced a strobing effect in the video. It reminded me of the old Macrovision copy protection feature used in playing VHS tapes. There were horizontal bands of brightest and darkest and seem to happen only during when there is sound. I used the composite video output to an old standard TV (no HDMI involved). If I adjust the brightness and contrast down enough, the strobing in the video is almost gone. Of course, the picture quality is very dark. I must say that Roku's customer support is excellent! Within a week, I had a replacement unit. But, sadly, it has the same problem of strobing video. I still have the unit I bought last year and it works very well. In fact, it has more video out options that Roku's newer models. I think Roku may have gone to a very cheap digital-to-analog conversion chip set.
Pros: Easy to use, Easy to set up
Cons: Poor picture quality, Inconsistent performance
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What a piece of junk...

I never got it set up because the remote was terrible. I sat right in front of the box and clicked the remote hundreds of times with little or no success. Very disappointing as I was hoping to buy this as a Christmas gift for multiple people. On line support was no help and ultimately forgot about me or just chose to stop answering me..
Cons: Remote did not work, Online support wS no help

I am a HUGE MAC fan, therefore I purchased Apple TV about a year ago and I constantly have problems with the performance. And believe me, I hate to say that since I am a MAC/Apple fan. However, the ROKU beats it HANDS-DOWN. LOVE IT...what a great gift idea.
Pros: Video selection, Easy to use, Compact, Built in Wi-Fi, Easy to set up, High quality picture, Great value

Well....mom and i recently got two Roku XD players..intially it was just one. We purchased it at [...] if you would believe it. Mom uses her box to watch Law & order via netflix...old tv shows...and movies...I use mine primarily for watching anime...netflix ...hulu plus...crunchyroll...all which have anime on them...so yea..Its a great investment. if you'd like watch netflix instant watch through something other than your laptop...its cheaper than getting a blu ray if that's the only reason you're getting one....its easy to set up the system...fun..most of all...the XD has great wireless range....my mom's box is on the other side of the house and it still works!setting up the cables....its easier if you have an hD tv...where you can just plug the HDMI cable in...a little more difficult if its a standard tv. but even if you are having trouble the customer service is very helpfulthat's all
Pros: Easy to use, High quality picture, Has my favorite channel, Built in Wi-Fi, Great value, Compact
Cons: Cable ports confusing

They are terrible - always locking up!l

This box is always locking up with a Green screen of death! There is no reset button so we need to pull power cord to reset and then reboot box. We could be watching something on the Roku box and accidentally (or intentionally) go to different channel on TV, such as a different HDMI port or a channel on the TV tuner. Going back to the HDMI channel for the Roku box usually causes the green screen of death requiring a box power cycle. Terrible for reliability!
Pros: Built in Wi-Fi, Compact, Easy to use, Easy to set up, Great value
Cons: Always locking up, Inconsistent performance

The worst customer service ever.

Before I bought this I should have paid more attention to the other 1 star ratings. When it does not work you have to deal with clueless customer service workers in India. Try getting them to understand you & forget being able to understand what is being said to you. If it does not work no one will email you a return postage paid label. Instead you are shipped a replacement with which was what I was told , with one in that box. Because I would never want to own one of these players after this experience I had to [...] send back the piece of junk.

Keeps crashing.... very disappointed! :(

I use this, combined with the Netflix app built in to my LG TV, instead of cable. The performance is just unreliable. Lost internet connection about 15 times in a 45-minute program on WiFi. Hard wired to the internet still loses connection about 3-5 times per show. Super annoying. Hulu app only lets you FF 30 seconds at a time, too, so when it crashes near the end, I have to click through a billion times, AND I have to watch the commercials again since you can't FF through them! Seven times in just a couple days it's just died altogether :( I hope the next version is better, but until then, really pathetic performance, combined with a real lack of programming.... Maybe I should call my cable provider and see if they'll take me back?? In the meantime, will the Roku people take this cute little doorstop back??
Pros: High quality picture, Easy to set up, Compact, Easy to use
Cons: Keeps crashing, Need fast internet service, Inconsistent performance, FF RW on Hulu dont work, No backup data stream, WiFi fail, Want more video choices
