Just finished setting one Roku XD up and ran into this. I'm running a dual-band ASUS RT-N56U router that has a 2.4ghz band and a 5ghz band. In this environment the "XD" model is useless. If you're unaware one of the differences between the "G" and "N" standards is data transfer speeds. Most households will have a mixed environment between consoles, smart tvs, cell phones, etc. Meaning the 2.4 ghz channel is saturated with "G" devices. Sticking this "N" capable device in that channel forces it to run at "G" speeds. For one Roku running 1080p that may be OK, but stick more than one, with other devices trying to run HD at "G" speeds and everything will get bogged down. HD content from one or two sources alone may not hurt it, but with a fully wired and wireless house with multiple users it will cause problems. If you're not concerned, or are only running one, then you're fine. If not, get the cheaper solution, or bump up to the XDS. This device has no place in this segment. Better yet, do some research and look up other streaming media players - you may be pleasantly surprised at the alternatives. I'm pretty disappointed right now, but I should have figured it out by the marketing shenanigans between the "XD" and "XDS" that this was the case. Roku should at least point out this limitation for the average user as most would never pick up on it. I'll keep the one I've got since it should be able to (hopefully) run fine without bogging my 2.4ghz channel down. However, the others I bought are going back. Hope this helps others make their call on what to buy.
Pros: Compact, Easy to set up, Great value, Easy to use
Cons: Inconsistent performance

Recently got the XD. Setup was pretty easy. Menu interface is sort of lame on both the box and the Roku website; can be difficult to figure out how to add some of the obscure channels, though Netflix, Amazon, etc. are straightforward. One thing I didn't notice in any of a number of reviews is that it was quite easy to set up with a universal remote (I use a LogiTech) through their PC interface, although I had to call it a DVD or LaserDisc player as the interface didn't having a "streaming video" category. Picture quality seems pretty good and haven't seen any problems with internet speed (we have a reasonably hi-speed service), but I've been somewhat concerned that the menus have had some wavy distortion bands and jitter to them. As long as it doesn't affect video quality I guess it's OK, but if it does, it'll be headed back on warranty. We won't use it too extensively, as my internet service has usage limits, but great for a few times a month when the Netflix DVDs on hand don't get us all fired up.
Pros: Easy to use, Great value, Built in Wi-Fi, Compact
