Great device, expensive video services

I am very satisfied with my Roku device, but not the video services. Some reviews implied that Roku will be a cable TV killer, but I found that replacing cable would be rather expensive -- for example, HULU has a monthly fee but offers far less on Roku than does the free version on my PC. Getting sports would add more fees. I suspect I would end up paying almost as much for the Roku video services as I am now paying for cable.
Pros: Easy to use, Compact, Easy to set up, Reliability, Built in Wi-Fi, High quality picture

"Happily Replacing Our Cable Box"

We replaced our cable subscription with Roku. After having it for about 1.5 months, we've realized just how little all those cable channels were used and how easily they were replaced with shows we actually find entertaining (all at our immediate selection). For example, we go to Hulu Plus, CrunchyRoll.net, Amazon VOD, and Netflix and log into programming that satisfies our tastes. If we feel like searching around, there are other channels offered through Roku that are bound to pique even exquisite tastes (...ours are pretty basic so we're definitely covered). I was initially concerned with not having NickJr for our toddler, but have downloaded VOD with Amazon on the cheap, instantly stream Dora & like on Netflix, and know that there are a couple smaller options for kid programs on channels on Roku (free). The cost of the Roku & additional expenses pays for itself within two months...at least in our case it did. The price for the Roku player + 18 a month for Netflix & HuluPlus & we're in business. Considering I paid over $55 monthly for cable & STILL watched more internet programming, it's effective & affordable. I will say that you want a reliable internet connection before cutting out everything else. And if picture quality is a big deal to you, you probably want to do the necessary hook-ups to get it. We don't & I'm not picky...and I still notice the quality is lacking. In closing, go for it if you don't think you need regular programming. The interface is very easy to use and navigate and you can easily find TONS of great shows & movies for the entire family free or on the major cheap.
Pros: Built in Wi-Fi, Great value, Easy to set up, Compact, Easy to use, Reliability
Cons: Need fast internet service, Want more video choices

Paradigm for simplicity

The simplicity of the Roku is amazing. From the second you open the box and it greets you with a hello to everyday use. It's completely silent, produces virtually zero heat, and operates wonderfully. All in all, the Roku is a fine addition to the home entertainment system.
Pros: Compact, Easy to set up, Easy to use
Cons: Want more video choices

Road to freedom from Cable

I like that Roku provides various choices for content, and is the only one I found that provides Hulu Plus. For me, it was easy to setup, but I had read before I bought it that I needed to have my laptop for setup. There was an issue with video/audio getting out of sync sometimes while watching a program. When I called to ask about it, I got a wonderful Customer Service representative who explained they were working on that issue and told me how to re-sync in the meantime. Overall, a great purchase and a very useful device. I look forward to additional content growth as the providers get a clue that this is the future.
Pros: High quality picture, Built in Wi-Fi, Great value, Easy to set up, Compact
Cons: Want more video choices

Great For Movies, Needs Better TV Option
on December 29, 2010

I love the ease of use, speed, and picture quality of the Roku. Netflix is a breeze, and the Hulu Plus content that is available looks nice.My only gripe is that free local broadcast television is not available for free on Roku (a la Hulu, etc.). [...].Otherwise it's great. Vimeo on the tv is wonderful as well.
Pros: Great value, Easy to set up, High quality picture, Netflix Speed Ease, Reliability, Easy to use, Compact, Built in Wi-Fi
Cons: Want more video choices, Lack of Hulu Plus Options
