The little box that Can!

Very happy with how the Roku has changed our viewing habits...love the HD streaming of Netflix, just fired up Pandora today. Wasn't totally impressed with Hulu Plus ($8/mo) so dropped it. Had some issues with sound cutting out (3 x), and contacted customer service. Never actually "fixed" the problem, but it's been ok coupla weeks and I figure I have the warranty to fall back on if it acts up again.
Pros: Great value, Works right out of box, Built in Wi-Fi, High quality picture, Compact
Cons: Had some sound issues

Purchased for my parents on Christmas. Set up took less than 10 minutes and was a breeze. Parents are a little technologically handicapped but they are flying through the menus with no problem. They have been watching movies all weekend and love it. Couldn't be happier.

We had bought a Blue Ray DVD player with wireless connection but was unable to stream Netflix. We returned the Sony player that on sale was $300 approx. This Christmas we were going to give another try at the Blue Ray when luckily I read reviews on the Roku and decided to try it. I opted for the mid-range style since it was on sale. We are pleased, beyond pleased. Easy to set up (we are all fingers when it comes to the new tech) and we were off and running in no time. Great little box!

Poor value for the money

The free video and audio channels are all worthless in my opinion. I can go on my computer and watch LOTS of free UFC interviews, press conferences etc but on Roku I get zero free. On my computer I can go on Hulu and watch lots of free content in SD. On Roku I get zero free from Hulu. I purchased this not realizing that I need a digital output to get 5.1 surround sound on my receiver. Why pay a lot for a Roku XD with digital out, when for less $ than that I can get a Blue-ray player that also does DVD, Netflix online and more, has plenty of outputs which take a standard cable (not the overpriced proprietary Roku component output cable). When compared to a Blu-Ray player, the XDS is a poor value in my opinion. This product would be good for someone with an old CRT TV or a smaller HDTV without surround sound. Also would be good for someone who wants a setup that is physically basic IE not a lot of cables.

XD needs serious firmware upgrade

Product needs serious firmware upgrade to fix wireless connectivity problems and setup problems. Could not complete setup using hdmi, had to use rca cables; discovered this purely by trial-and-error. After completing setup, box drops wireless connection about once a day. I upgraded from the original roku, which is much more stable.

Simple and convenient to use

We use the Roku primarily for Netflix movies and Pandora internet radio. Pandora is great to select your prefered genre of music and let it play. Netflix streaming video encourages more spontaneous movie watching versus the mail Netflix service. Quality of streaming video is excellent. Our only reservation is that the Netflix streaming video selection is not as inclusive as their DVD selection, particularly for some of the older movies.
