NOT so good

While the print quality of this machine is high, very good photo and text printing.
The design of the machine is really ridiculous.
Case in point, when the machine runs out of letter size paper, it just automatically switched to the next full tray.
The machine will tell you several weeks in advance that you are running out of ink, but will not tell you that you are out of one size or the other of paper.
My LOW INK warning has been on for 3 weeks now, and I still have not run out of ink.
But twice in the last week, the machine has switched from printing on 8.5 X 11 paper to 8.5 X 14 paper when the letter size ran out.
True, you will not lose a page of document, but you will also now have to trim the longer pages down.
What idiot thought of that feature?
Also how about making a tray that will hold an entire ream of paper?
500 pages instead of 250?

my second remarkable Brother product...:-)

I have owned another Brother MFC(laser version) and it continues to be a ultra dependable and easy to use machine covering all my small engineering office printing fax copying and scanning needs....a new client required 11x17 working documents and this new machine has exceeded my expectation and provided the flexibility I needed at a great price. I have owned several hp, canon and epson stand alone printers and this one beats them all in price and quality for the for the CAD and rendering work that we do.

11" x 17" GREAT IDEA!!!

This printer is incredible. Based on value to have the ability to print and scan 11" x 17" documents from a home printer. Given the opportunity I would have gladly used this in a business setting as well.
Great bargain, great value Well Build, I have had zero problems with this and I have had it, since they first came out.

worst printer ever used

Color printing is it so distorted, red is light pink, royal blue shows up as light baby blue. I tried to print a flyer of a red brick house, the royal blue sky was barely blue, the red brick house looked very light pink and the green grass was just sick.

Printer is very good. Not very happy with the scan function. Too hard to print to PDF. I need to contact support again because when I save scan to file, it says it cannot find my printer. Took support to be able to print pictures to the best quality. Maybe when I get all of the bugs worked out, I will be completely happy with this printer. Time will tell.

Extremely Poor Setup

Wireless setup for this printer was frustrating... about 5 hrs so far. I have set up several wireless printers, and setup for this model was difficult and counter-intuitive (e.g. requires a negative response to override the auto-router search feature). FINALLY, got the router connected. Then, tried to install the printer drivers from the CD. Not successful yet (add-ons not compatible with Windows 7, etc; no drivers listed online). Extremely poor software writing.

Good Choice for Small Office

We print primarily 11x17 b/w for reviewing purposes & this Brother has been good for us - so far.
For the last 3 months, we have been using a refurbished machine, sent directly to us from the manufacturer after our previous one went kaput within 4 months! Perhaps it was a fluke. I hope so.
Unlike the HP I bought 2 yrs ago, the Brother seems to work well with our macs. I've been happy about that. One of my friends, who is also an architect, has an older version of the MFC-J6710DW, which is why I bought it.
This machine produces color & b/w, double-sided prints. It prints & scans any size up to 11x17, which works for us 99% of the time. If we need something larger, we send it to the local print shop.
Color is good for small, check-sets, but not for client presentations. We've run 70% recycled content paper, card stock, envelopes, and glossy paper thru the machine & it's done a good job with all of it. The lines are still crisp & continuous weights after 3 months of use.
What I don't like: machine interface and paper cartridges.
The interface is clumsy. It's got a flip-up screen & you can scroll thru the menus, but sometimes trying to remember how to run a test print is time-consuming. I think a touch-screen would also be more useful.
We use 8.5x11 in the top cartridge and 11x17 in the bottom. The way that the drawer cartridges slide in & out of the machine are rough and noisy. The paper adjustments inside the drawers are flimsy, and they don't move/adjust smoothly. There's a "catch" & we have to use some force to engage the adjustment levers. Sometimes I think I'll break one of the controllers if I'm not careful.
I think the fax option is outdated. We receive faxes thru our online fax service as emails. We receive the fax & download them to our server. No paper unless we need it.
All in all, the Brother has worked well for us. We don't use the interface very often, and we add paper about once a month. If you don't need fabulous color prints, this is a good machine for a small office because it can print several sizes up to 11x17 & scan similarly. The speed of the prints is pretty good too - unless you're in a super hurry (nothing prints quickly enough when you're in a hurry).

Best 11x17 seen anywhere for price

My one-time installation comments
Environment is Linksys Router with two Mac’s running OS 10.x connected wirelessly and one Windows XP Pro SP3 wired and the printer wired to the router. Hindsight after 3.5 Hours for a friend:
Hardware: Unit auto runs cartridge check; large black ink had to be reset twice firmly, not hard. Ignore tray error till inks loaded; then tray error disappeared... having prior to inks loaded paper in both. A page prints with color block matrix of smaller blocks. It is these small blocks aligned in rows and columns that should be solid with no lines running through them. Run print alignment page and set alignment settings. Paper size adjusting guides are weak; be gentle with them. No guides to hold paper in rear manual feed; single sheet only.
Software: Delete all non-used scanning software supplied with OEM scanners: Brother recommendation; in our case, HP OfficeJet software from the Macs (user did this) and in XP Pro: Start Menu-Programs-HP>uninstall. Machines auto found IP of printer when printer was connected to router; after uninstalls rebooted OS. Auto Run the CD's complete install of software regardless of what appears to be newer software on website. Select wired network connection in this case [printer wired to router-not wireless as Macs are]. Our issue was printing okay with no scanning from Printer or Computer possible. On XP Pro a TwainReset.exe program was run per Brother and software reinstalled on cleaned XP Pro. This did not solve issue right away. Going to Macs and getting them working we went back to the XP Pro and it too was working. Go Figure…. Brother's tech support was great.
