GREAT, INEXPENSIVE MFC 11X17 IN ALL FUNCTIONS

I have an hp 7000 13x19 printer, but needed an 11x17 scanner-copier. The HP 11x17 all in 1 does not scan-copy 11x17, but the Brother mfc-j6710dw does 11x17 in all functions. The hp 7000 may have "slightly" better color quality if you want high quality large photo prints, but again it's only a printer. The color quality of the 6710 is fine for alll other aplications.
I now use the 6710 for almost everything.
One thing to keep in mind is the low cost.
Setup was easy and the speed is better than most inkjets I have used. Some users say that the 6710 is large & bulky. "DUH" it's an 11x17 all in 1, with two 11x17, 250 sheet paper trays.
Some say the paper trays are flimsly & dificult, but you are loading 250 sheets into a precision machine, not throwing them in a trash can.
I use all functions (except fax) and they work flawlessly. I produce 24x36 engineering drawings and use the 6710 to print half size proof prints. The prints are clear, with fine lines & legable.
The xxlarge ink carts are easily replacable, reducing ink cost & changing time.
For a lot more money, you may get a better machine, but for the cost/service ratio, I beleive this MFC (or other Brother 11x17 mfc's) are the best deals available.

Good value for money.

I got this because my 8 1/2 x 11 scanner died. I chose 11x17 because I frequently deal with sheet music and there is nothing between 8 1/2 x 14 and 11 x 17.
Scan quality appears to be good. It reproduces manuscript and printed music well. It also reproduced graphic output from an analytical machine well.
Print quality is not quite as nice as my HP Deskjet 7xx, but not bad. Maybe tweaking print settings would help. The printing instructions for double-sided are fuzzy; a little time with the machine will help make it work better, I'm sure.
Copying is a combination of scanning and printing. It was able to copy and reprint 11x17 sheets with no problems. Trying to copy slightly oversize music using the "Print to Fit" option resulted in printing that was too small, but with a dialed in reproduction ratio it worked OK. I didn't try to copy single sheets to make a double-sided 11x17; looks like it might be cumbersome.
The black cartridge supplied with the machine did not last very long.
Considering the price, it's really got good capabilities. To do everything I want would cost 10x as much and weigh 10x as much. Great home office all-in-one.

I am in LOVE with my printer.

From the minute I set up my Brother printer and looked at a test page one of my programs printed out I knew I was in LOVE with my printer. The colors were so true and proper I couldn't believe my eyes. I started to print other things just to marvel at the quality of the print. No matter what the print job, it has preformed with flying COLORS. PUN intended. Large or small each time I print something I seem to challenge the printer in one way or another and it always comes through. I've printed everything from pictures of flowers to letters to friends with pictures embedded in the letters to graphs of data. Each time the printer has preformed perfectly. Even when it run low on ink. It told me in no uncertain terms. I went to the troubleshooting guide (online) and found this wonderful step by step instruction sheet on not only how to replace the ink cartridges but a full range of other user friendly maintenance tips. This speaks well not only for the printer but for Brother as well. As my printer is an "all in one", I have used it to scan and copy as well. It performs both of those functions just as well as it prints. It enlarges and reduces in size a picture with such clarity I can't describe it other than to say it is beautiful. As I said in the beginning I AM IN LOVE WITH MY PRINTER.

A good printer with the same old problems

To begin with, this printer really is a great printer for how I use it. I mainly print documents and for that when printing on the highest settings the documents black text is crisp and sharp.
The 2 pictures that I printed with this printer when printed on photo quality paper look like they came from a professional printing service.
The (what I consider a huge) problem with this printer is the same as all the other Brother printers that I've owned over the years, it gobbles down ink even when you are not printing. What I mean by that is that I printed 2 color images, which took little to no colored ink. However after the amount of times that this printer cleans the print heads, I am out of colored ink, even though I've only ever printed 2 color images and ALL my documents are printed with only black.
At the price of ink today, it's often cheaper to go buy a disposable printer and buy it again when the ink runs out. The amount of ink that this printer uses just to clean the print heads is out of control. And since the printer won't even print with just black when the color cartridges are empty, they basically force you to buy more colored ink to be able to use this printer when just printing black.
Again, I printed 2 color pictures, the rest of my documents are always set to black ink only, and yet in the amount of time it takes to replace 3 or 4 black XL cartridges, the colored ink is exhausted due to only the printer cleaning the print heads, which is ridiculous procedure and should be fixed.
Other than the extensive use of colored ink when not even printing in color, the printer is a really nice printer and the fax portions works great, I've yet had a problem connecting to any other fax machines with this Brother all in one printer.
The scanner is also well done and very fast. Overall the features built into this unit are superb.
It's only real downfall to me is how it can use full cartridges of color ink when I'm not even printing color pages, and the absurd price of the Brother ink.

I had my previous Brother MFC for 5 years. Best printer I have ever owned. When it finally gave it up, I went straight for another Brother MFC. Setup was easy. WiFi features are great. Controls commonality with my previous printer is high so there was not much of a learning curve. Works great on my home network. Love the duplex feature and multiple paper size options. It is larger than my old one, but hey, paper size options come at the price of desktop space.

It works ok but the colors including black arent rich and do not pop. I havent tried photo paper yet but I am not hoping for the best. Reds are pink... blues are purple and I have calibrated the machine. I guess its ok but I am not fully satisfied with the color capabilities of this machine

King of the Paper Jams
on December 4, 2013

I've had this machine for almost a year. It's only plus is that it prints 11 x 17, which is why I purchased it for my small business. Printing at that size is fine, but I agree with the previous reviewer about the constant paper jams at the 8.5 x 11 size. It happens so frequently that I purchased an HP printer for letter size and use the Brother solely for scanning and printing 11 x 17. If HP ever makes an affordable machine that prints the larger size, Brother will never get my business again.

Needs some work

I bought this primarily for it's large scanner bed. It works quite well for that with a minor problem. When paper is placed against the left/top alignment guide, the scan does not start right at the left/top of item being scanned.
Paper type selection is very limited. Does not handle photo paper feeding from a tray very well.
The extra sheet feeder is hard to put paper in. Frequent "fail to feed" errors. It is also very hard to get paper to align properly. Frequently the paper comes through slightly skewed. Extremely difficult to get both sides aligned properly when needing to print on both sides. When doing multiple sheets or sides, it is necessary to wait until machine goes through its cycling before putting paper back in the feeder. Feeder can only handle one page at a time. A serious drawback.
Needs: Machine needs to register the paper precisely from the extra sheet feeder. The extra sheet feeder should be able to handle at least 20 pages of paper.
